Socceroos vs Mexico/Switzerland - Pre-World Cup Friendlies 2026 🇦🇺🇲🇽🇨🇭

Pretty boring and standard lineup. Volpato not on bench as expected.

Risking Toure, Circati and Bos, hopefully don't play the full-90.

Good to see the three starting CB's playing together though. Midfield is very rough. Metcalfe and Leckie combo is also very rough offensively. It's a strong defensive side overall.

Geez without Irankunda and Volpato this lineup has barely any attacking threat. Hope it's not a sign of what to expect against Turkey.

Oh amazing, could you link me to that person's post?

On your second point, my hesitance isn't so much about whether friendlies are "official" or "unofficial" (they appear to be the latter, which makes sense), and more whether they constitute a "competition" or not.

My common sense understanding of the word "competition" is that it is more or less synonymous with "tournament" or something like that (i.e. multiple gamers between more than one team with an overall winner). It wouldn't, to my mind, describe a one-off friendly game.

The FIFA eligibility rules appear consistent with my understanding, because they distinguish "competition" from "matches" on multiple occasions (see for example at Article 5 29.4 which mentions "football trials, training camps, matches, or competitions", thereby distinguishing the two, as well Article 9.2 a and b, both i and ii which all refer to a "match in an official competition").

On that basis, it looks like a friendly match ought not be counted as an "unofficial competition", but if someone in the know has said otherwise I'd be very interested to read it!

Here is one of the posts from jvrkfootball (the ex-FIFA person) where he mentions Segacic being tied to Croatia after appearing in any match. Click on the above post to see the full reply.

The same situation applies to Volpato.

You'd imagine that's essentially the 26. + Volpato

No Gauci, Yengi or Borello and one more to be dropped for Volpato. Seems like we are going to take both Rowles and Geria which is a bad decision and probably going to drop both Yengi and Borello and maybe use Irankunda as the backup 9 instead???

The final cut will probably be Mabil, I suspect. Weird decisions all around.

Yengi cut means only 1 striker in the squad!

Yengi not in squad worries me. No back up strikers!
So who's missing? Borello, Gauci, Volpato, Yengi?

It may be Yengi and Volpato are out because they have been the shortest in camp.

Beach over Gauci is not how I'd go.

No back-up strikers is bold. I guess Irankunda then Boyle are the choices there.

I'm guessing Volpato is a lock so one of the inside forwards will make way. Probably Velupillay or Mabil.

I'd lose one of Degenek or Geria for a striker.

I'd drop Borello, Beach, Degenek and Mabil from the squad left.

Yengi is definitely getting cut. He has been in the camp the same length as 7 other players who are all in this squad.

I just don't like the idea of possibly staggering Irankunda and Toure throughout a game. Irankunda is definitely the second best 9 in the squad though.

I get the feeling Poppa see's Irakunda as a sub to replace Toure with.
What ever Poppa does i feel like im going to be pissed off

Borello acts as striker

I did get the impression from some comments Yengi didn't find his feet or the pace of training straight away. It's staggering if we don't pick another 9 in the squad. Sapsford or Duke.

Saw an astute post regarding player numbers. Must be 1-26 for the WC. For those that read into todays listing - Beach (#28), Velupillay (#34), Trewin (#36), Mabil (#38)

Leckie, Metcalfe, Irvine and O'Neill foursome is really rough. They'll put in a shift but fuck me, there's nothing going forward.

Risky starting all these players. Fingers crossed. Need that bit more cohesion together.

Extremely risky. Haven't seen other nations playing their full-teams yet. I wouldn't be playing Bos, Circati or Toure. At least not starting and playing a majority of the game.
