Asian cup looks a real chance
To win? I’d like to think so but we’re kinda cursed. I say it about the Tillies every year: “this is our year”. The Roos I usually think are outsiders but I’d like to think we’re among the favourites now, but Japan and South Korea are still way clear of us. Semis at least though!

The last two exits have been self inflicted. One moment of madness and chances not taken.

Tillies been blanks for years now HSF.
All huff and puff.
Roos as mentioned own worst enemy can fight the fight lack finish and commit harakiri haha

I’ve noticed that we’ve often underperformed at the start of tournaments and/or became unlucky to lose.
  • 2021 Olympics: the Olyroos beat Argentina, narrowly lost to Spain then shat the bed against Egypt. The Tillies beat the Football Ferns, lost to Sweden and drew with the US. We beat Great Britain in a thriller then narrowly lost to Sweden before again barely losing the bronze game to the US.
  • 2022 World Cup: lost 4–1 to France, and while France are a strong team we didn’t play well. We then beat Tunisia and Denmark to advance to the round of 16, where we were so close to beating Argentina.
  • 2023 World Cup (home soil): we barely beat Ireland (only winning from a penalty) and lost to Nigeria. Had we not have beaten Canada (who we flogged), we coulda been grouped on home soil, the ultimate embarrassment (the Ferns did this but they aren’t that a strong of a team). We then beat Denmark in the quarters and went on to the semis and lost to the Lionesses who are just better than us. A heartbroken side couldn’t claim bronze against Sweden but Australian soccer did claim the hearts of millions.
  • 2023 Asian Cup: shoulda done better against India, barely beat Syria and then drew with Uzbekistan. After that we smashed Indonesia and were so close to beating South Korea, only to fall short with a stoppage time equaliser from a penalty then lose in extra time because of a goal from the greatest Asian player ever (Son Heung-min). Mind you Craig Goodwin scored the only goal for us in that game while the two South Korean goalscorers are Premier League players.
  • 2024 Olympics: just a mess. The Olyroos didn’t qualify because we weren’t good enough and qualifiers weren’t in an international window, while the Tillies had no Sam Kerr and had injuries to others. We were awful against Germany and Zambia (comeback aside I was furious seeing how easily we conceded). The US eliminated us but we coulda gone through had a cheating Canada side not have gone through, but then we didn’t and Tony Gustavsson got the sack.
  • 2025 SheBelieves Cup: shouldn’t’ve been there. We were fucked with injuries and played stronger teams than us. We shoulda focused on rebuilding and getting more youth in, which to our credit we eventually did (only to then forget about that before the Asian Cup).
  • 2026 Asian Cup (home soil): we barely beat the Philippines, smashed Iran who are terrible but also were fearing their lives, then drew with South Korea. We then got better as we beat North Korea and China before being heartbroken by a strong Japan side, despite a sold out stadium in Sydney and huge crowds for the other games. However, I think if we brought on Amy Sayer instead of keeping Caitlin Foord on. One sub coulda changed the game and seen us win silverware.
  • 2026 FIFA Series (men’s on home soil): the Roos may not have played the best football but we did end up beating Cameroon who, despite not making the World Cup, are a fairly strong side. We then beat Curaçao (who to their credit have a decent squad but played badly) and lifted the trophy on home soil. The Tillies played easy teams (Malawi without the Chaŵinga sisters and hosts Kenya) and arguably shoulda done better, but nevertheless lifted the trophy too. This is an exception as we won.
  • 2026 World Cup: we’ve got Turkey, the US and Paraguay. A fairly even group but Turkey would be definitely the favourites to top it.
  • 2027 Asian Cup: we’ve got Singapore, Iraq and Tajikistan. We should easily top this group.
  • 2027 World Cup: qualified but no other info yet.

Neither are the strongest team in our confederation, therefore have never been the favourites unless we’re on home soil (then we edge it out). We aren’t of the calibre to win World Cups unfortunately.

Winning WC’s doesn’t even enter the mind nor mention..
Bridge way way too far.
We punch above our weight always have for decades.
That’s it

I always felt that if the Italy game had stayed 0-0 at FT in 2006, we would have brought on fresh legs and steamrolled them. Then we would have dealt comfortably with Ukraine (Italy beat them 3-0) in the quarter and would then have been knocked out by Germany in the semi - putting them in the final.

Would've been the perfect WC really, and about as good as we can aspire to at the moment.

Is he even that good? Lol what a story
I showed no interest when he looked like playing for Italy.

Another member of G and G sent me extended highlights of Volpato in Serie A. He looks high quality.

Volpato will be an enormous boost to the Socceroos!

He realises Italy will never qualify for a WC. Can’t believe it? They’ve missed out on 3 successive WCs, yet Italy have one of the UEFA Big Five domestic leagues. They’ve won 4 WCs.

Insightful, quality analysis from Aussie Scout!

It makes for interesting reading his impressive dribbling stats, and, who is ahead of Volpato in the pecking order at his Serie A club.
I think the pecking order thing plus the number of Italian players who get more minutes at other clubs shows that he was unlikely to play for the Azzurri outside maybe friendlies. They haven’t even capped Michael Kayode at senior level yet and he started all but one Premier League game for Brentford this season who are better than Sassuolo. Hell, even Matteo Ruggeri is uncapped by the senior team.

Thanks.

I’m totally out of the UEFA club scenario. Maybe Volpato needs to change clubs/leagues?

Given the stature of the leagues/clubs the Roos play in, Volpato will be similar standing to Circati, Ryan, Bos and Irvine. Metcalfe has mainly been a sub.

If you level it based on club rather than league then Riley McGree plays at a higher level than Jackson Irvine and Maty Ryan.
