Socceroos vs USA 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺 🇺🇸

I don't think we'd have any red players. Everyone has and can contribute positively on their day.

This is a well rounded squad.

Their attack is good while our defence is strong. We got opened up in the last friendly so we're going to need much better marking.

Their defence is shaky so we need Irankunda to start this game.

Their attack on paper is very good. But as a cohesive attack they have been poor except in friendlies since after the last world cup. Panama consistently beats them in CONCACAF and their ELO rank in the confederation is now 4th. They smash the minnows in their confederation but have trouble elsewhere.

Assume they lose against Germany and Senegal in their last 2 friendlies they go into Alfaro's stingy Paraguay without a win this year. Drop points there and they have to attack us which Popovic will love since they will likely lose Against Turkiye on MD3

Reports Poch has been offered the AC Milan job post WC. How I hope they have a dressing room fight and he doesn't give a shit while the players also implode.

I think Popovic has the dressing room but the application in games still isn't there and we look lost.

the effort areas are there so the roos look unified to me

The other groups games not involving Australia are simply fascinating and I'll be watching all of them. I'm just in 2 minds. USA implosion or a glorious game against Paraguay? Paraguay to smack them and show 'this is how football/soccer really is'.

Paraguay were arguable similar in 06 with 2 1:0 losses to England and Sweden with the latter being at the death and England was in the opening minutes then a small consolation by beating T&T.

I know the USA cops a lot of flak because of their lack of history and failure to string results together, but that is a very decent team. They have a lot of high level players to choose from.

Haji Wright would be better than any striker we’ve had for over 10 years and he’s their third choice. We crow about Bos but they have Robinson. Look at their midfield.

If they can ever put it all together they could do some damage.

Interesting take on USA v AUS by CBS Golazo soccer commentators, including Tony Meola former goalie forr USMNT. The old tropes, "Australia are physical, they're disruptive"; "As long as we're not playing them in AFL or Rugby, I'm not worried." "Also "but they can hurt you, they have some good players up top." Even if we don't get through the group, beating USA would give me enormous satisfaction

So fascinating as a loss to Paraguay will heap pressure on the USA. I think their camp is shaky but once the game starts anything can happen.

GOLD!
Adam Peacock in conversation with Simon Hill, on whether the US is underestimating Australia: "There's nothing I hope for more in 2026, I don't care about my own heealth, other sporting pursuits, if we beat America"
Simon: "But you care about your own health!"
Adam:" No, no. I'd happily cop a few doses of COVID if we beat America on June 19"

It would make me very happy, plus the American reaction should be pretty hilarious.

The boys! How I miss these voices more regularly in Australian football but they do have their contributions.

No discredit to Basheer but it's unfortunate we've not had Hill call our world cup games since 2006. Basheer does have his own soundbites from the big moments but one does wonder how Hill would've called it.
