World Cup 2026 Australia thread

Most tecent game v Curacao . As soon as McGree came on all of the sudden it changed the game. We were outplayed with Hrustic/Metcalfe/Trewin/O’Neil there
Yeah he's had some good games but not at the rate we'd have wanted.

I'm still in denial about McGree. Surely he will come good... Surely... :(
It's interesting we still haven't heard it directly from the official channels. Maybe there is an article floating around. The media have the information but I find it weird we still haven't seen an official reaction or length of absence stated.

What is the scan result tho?
Want to know how serious his hammy is?

No such information has been release by the looks of it. I'm curious how bad it is but also waiting for the FA and Boro to also announce it. Passing word is enough that the media are most likely correct here but I wish there had been an official announcement too. Popovic may have a press conference in the next days.

It's kind of weird counting the MLS based incomings as new when it was seemingly sure they would. I wish such named had been announced earlier. This bits and pieces has left a lot open and it's not fun.

My 3 outs: Beach, Geria, Borrello. RWB cover with Trewin and Metcalfe. We'll be right.

Content is really coming in fast. Once the squad is announced I guess this will become the 'home' of non match tournament stuff.

Who gets excited watching their national team cede the ball to the opposition, meaning our most involved players are the keeper, CBs and DMs, and even wing backs as Popovic goes 5-4-1 without the ball which is 2/3 of the time. I don't want to hear a coach get excited about how effective our main "striker" is at being the first line of defence. Possession is not everything of course, but it tells a story:

POPOVIC 2025
v CAN 34%; v USA 34%; v VEN 34%; v COL 33%

ARNOLD 2022
: v FRA 38%; v TUN 42%; v DEN 31%; v ARG 39%

POSTECOGLOU 2014
v CHI 44%; v NED 48%; v SPA 45%

Bring back Ange. He'll get bored being a pundit (or get sacked for being grumpy)

Attacks feel exciting under Popovic because they're so rare. They're also often drab. We're going to have maybe 4 chances per game.

Basically he wants attrition in the back 2 thirds and then a release to the front but even those guys seem stifled.

I was mad at Mabil's laziness during the brief world cup minutes. I understand he's categorised as a past generation but once he gets going he's still crafty. More dangerous than Borrello but if Irankunda is the lock then I see a bit of a competition for spaces after.

McGree + Bos, Irankunda, Burgess. But yeah get your point. It's pretty dire for creativity outside Bos, Toure, Irankunda. Uninspiring bench options.

That could be it. I'd probably have Geria over Degenek though. It leaves us skint at CF but it means Yengi and Irankunda are back ups to Toure. I think Boyle is seen as an option too.

Some bloke tweeted he's paid thousands to see Borrello play at a world cup. He tried his best but after the Nabbout farce in Russia...

Initially I feared we were skint on midfielders but seeing Metcalfe, Hrustic and Leckie listed as attackers, they could play deeper in an emergency.

Jason Geria is mixed in most statistical metrics despite getting consistent full nineties at Albirex Niigata so at most would likely be a differential option or injury cover in the Socceroos playing list.

I'd take Geria at RWB over Trewin any day. Honestly, with the names now confirmed, we don't really need Trewin as we're stacked in defence and midfield.
