Matilda's abroad

I wonder if EVE will stay with Leicester or look for another club to stay in the loop for the WWC.
Emily van Egmond will still be in the loop for the 2027 Women's World Cup regardless of where she's playing her club football given the current Matildas selection policy though.

Given she’s played for a shitton of clubs I wouldn’t be surprised if she moves. I don’t think she should be picked for the World Cup though.

Given that Montemurro says the Matildas are in World Cup preparation mode and she’s in the extended squad for the games against Mexico I guess she’s every chance of going to Brazil next year.

Emily van Egmond being part of the Matildas playing list for the 2027 Women's World Cup is a given though which only serves to reiterate how flawed the selection policy is if Montemurro is being given free rein to continue prioritising the old guard over our youth prospects from the Tillies farm system.

It will be the last hurrah for the older players in the squad but the younger ones will have two or three world cups after this one.

You’d think so but then the Olympics are the year after that. We thought the Asian Cup would be their last hurrah but they appear to be sticking around for the World Cup because it’s only a year away. Pretty unfair on the kids though that they’re locked out of ever playing till they’re 25. Even Clare Wheeler, one of our best players, only had 14 caps prior to the 2023 World Cup (which was held when she was 25). Clare Hunt (who was 24) only had nine.

In preparation mode we should be testing out who should make it, not keeping the same players with a few tweaks. It sounds like he’s already picked his squad.

2029 (the next year we don’t have a tournament) really can’t come soon enough for the youngsters. Razz turned 21 yesterday and will be 24 in 2029. Dani will be 23. Those are prime ages.

We need to start promoting the likes of Shelby McMahon, Skye Halmarick and Alexia Apostolakis from the Matildas farm system into the senior national team setup ahead of the 2028 Olympics cycle in addition to giving Ilona Melegh a run between the sticks more often as she will eventually become our second string keeper behind Chloe Lincoln before she ends up starting outright.

The Matildas have the 2029 Women's Asian Cup in Uzbekistan though which includes qualification through late 2028 as soon as the Olympics cycle concludes.

That does bring up a good point though: do we think that:
  • Alexia Apostolakis (Greece/Philippines)
  • Indi dos Santos (Malta/Portugal)
  • Jacynta Gala (Argentina/Italy/Sri Lanka)
  • Daniela Galić (Croatia)
  • Izzy Gómez (Mexico)
  • Alana Jančevski (North Macedonia)
  • Grace Kuilamu (Fiji/Romania)
  • Anna Rasmussen (Cook Islands/South Africa)
  • Sienna Saveska (North Macedonia)
  • Adriana Taranto (Italy)
  • Melissa Taranto (Italy)
  • Peta Trimis (Greece)
  • Talia Younis (Lebanon)
And so on (did I miss any big ones?) will wait around, or go and play for other countries? I think Danella Butrus (Iraq) is unlikely to play for anyone but us because of her ethnicity (Assyrian) but the others don’t have that factor.

And Peta Trimis, Annalese Rasmussen etc. (if we can include players from such lowly clubs as the Mariners). 🤓

Definitely Peta Trimis will also follow suit in being promoted from the farm system and maybe Annalise Rasmussen if she can get game time at Juventus over the course of next season.

Does that count? If so then I would assume the U20 World Cup counts thus cap-tying Dani Galić.
Under the current eligibility rules Alana Jancevski and Daniela Galic would both be locked in to the Matildas since they both represented Australia at age grade level in official tournaments but not sure whether this would still be the case given that they were capped prior to the rules being changed.
