AFC Women's Champions League

Not good enough from the girls today with too many unforced errors and turnovers committed in addition to being unable to convert chances into shots at goal.
I think that poor start really cost them. The external factors wouldn't have helped (pouring rain, quick turnover from the grand final), but they should have been more switched on to start.

It was good to see Uchendu get some game time again though, shame she wasn't able to do much with it though.

Full time at the Suwon Sports Complex. Melbourne City lose 3-1 to Tokyo Verdy Beleza in their AFC Women's Champions League semi-final game courtesy of a brace of goals to Yuzuho Shiokoshi in the fourth and 78th minute of the match along with a goal to Miharu Shinjo in the 10th minute, ending their campaign at the start of the competition's centralised finals series and hopes of a historic treble. Aideen Keane scored the only goal of the match for Melbourne City in the 37th minute, with the result meaning that they fall short in Asian continental competition yet again and subsequently head into an offseason full of change where key players are set to depart the club and move elsewhere, including overseas.

Bet Sydney coulda done better than City this campaign. Hardly beating Nasaf then getting found out by Tokyo Verdy. If Holly Mac doesn’t leave the only reason I can think of is wanting to win this and to keep farming the league.

Agree that Melbourne City should have ideally hit the ground running as soon as the match got underway and not committed so many turnovers and unforced errors inside the opposition half especially given how clinical and disciplined Tokyo Verdy Beleza were throughout the game which included stifling Holly McNamara enough to have her end up blanking in score involvements and only have the one shot at goal.

Can you explain these comments, I’m having difficulty understanding where you are coming from.
You say Sydney FC could have done better but they only just avoided the wooden spoon in the ALW so that’s difficult to rationalise and that because MacNamara didn’t score she wants to stay at Melbourne City so that she can win the AFC Championship and ‘keep farming the league’ …….whatever that means.

City always seem to put zero effort into these games because they only focus on the league. Sydney were shit last season but Nasaf are an Uzbek team. We would comfortably beat them as City should’ve. Tokyo Verdy would’ve been much much harder but City were quite bad by the looks of it. Put another top Dub side in there and they could get the job done, City are just cursed. Look at the final last season: City should’ve had a bigger lead than one goal and poor reffing decisions cost them the final.

Regarding Holly Mac my point was she’s never won an AWCL (no A-League club has) so if she stupidly decides to sign another contract with City that’s the only reason. However, doing so would still be stupid because A. she’s too good, she’s outgrown the A-League and needs to be playing in a big league, and B. keeping her means City are taking away a spot for a young kid to develop to create the next generation after her. Daniela Galić did it right by leaving when people found out she was good, she just initially picked the wrong club (or the wrong club picked her) because Twente didn’t need her. Then she went to Vittsjö to shine and quickly became a key player, and still seems to want a spot in the Matildas squad even though she keeps getting snubbed (unlike a certain male player of Croatian descent in her position who I also highly rated who wasn’t resilient and just went to Croatia instantly).

The two Korean sides (which made international headlines cause North Koreans are virtually banned from going to South Korea and vice versa so these girls will be one of the few North Koreans to have ever gone there for unfortunately many decades to come) are 0–0 at the moment. This is the type of game we should’ve had for City vs Verdy: a strong fight from both sides with one eventually coming out on top.

I don't think Melbourne City are cursed but Shelby McMahon has regressed since last year in terms of the performances she's been putting in and the vast majority of the playing list including the likes of Danielle Turner and Aideen Keane have little to no experience altogether playing continental football, in addition to the fact that the tactical system is not working because the players are crumbling under pressure and needlessly committing turnovers and unforced errors especially against the more clinical and disciplined sides like Wuhan Jiangda, PFC Nasaf and Tokyo Verdy Beleza.
