The Western United Thread

What's your take on bringing back a GC team? Whether United or another. Is it really a sporting cemetery, or is there a market for soocer there?
We just have to lower our standards for crowds. If someone says they will bankroll a gc team who cares if they get 5k. Any team that can play in the top divisions should be allowed

definitely there is if managed well
it started well but Miron was a clown and Clive had no idea how a football club worked
750000 people and an existing stadium plus a tasty derby
by far the best prospect for a new a league club imo

and Jason Culina was a massive problem
his astonishing ego destabilised the entire club
absolutely toxic
I saw it from the stands

Seemed an incredible coup at the time to get him while he was still in his prime

Looked like a real service to oz football

The word is that he used to say to his team mates " do you know who I am ? " Massive wanker.

Have you heard his father speak? No different .... I loved it when Brisbane Strikers beat the Croat's back in the 1997 GF.

That was in my anti-NSL days of course.

I could hear and see the abuse he heaped upon his teammates during the game. CBUS is a small arena. It really was unacceptable on every level.

He was a terrific player but he did far more harm than good to that team.

To be fair to Culina, he was way above the ability of his teammates, so I could understand his frustration, but not the way he vented it. His behaviour was both disrespectful and unprofessional.

Gold Coast United was such a strange team, and to afford Culina, the rest of the side had been cobbled together, like trying to build a house from offcuts from a building site. Kristian Rees, for example, was one of the CBs. So Culina found himself in a very strange space. I'm not sure what he expected, however. To some extent, he must've known what he was getting into.

The petulance, however, had to be seen to be believed.

Why were u anti nsl out of curiosity
You can read these two articles for an idea.

I think I have another article in my head somewhere. But I think I need to see the NSD come to fruition before it reveals itself

haha leaves me with just as many questions

"Throughout this metamorphosis, I look with chagrin to my attitude towards fans of our rival, Melbourne Knights. In the past, I saw them as the evil beast of Australian soccer; but now I grudgingly respect their steadfastness, and their realistic views of what many people think of 'ethnics', for want of a better word."

what is their realistic view of ethnics?

"I became a trolling internet soccer forum abuser"

Which forums did you abuse people on haha

I am not sure I knew what I meant by that statement. But all I can say is that I don’t dislike them as much as I did back then.

I was still Son of Sam on TWGF

I went through a phase when i was very pro northern spirit and was obsessed with "mainstream clubs". I was never anti ethnic though and enjoyed the mix of mainstream and traditional clubs.
Who knows we might get a similar mix again

Haha i asled ai what u meant and it very confidently replied on ur behalf

I guess we never saw u on 442. That 2006-2010 period on 442 was wild (before my time) not sure why it moderated

FA KNOCKS BACK WESTERN UNITED RETURN BID

Football Australia has knocked back Western United’s bid to reclaim its A-Leagues licence — but the embattled club plans to appeal the decision.

Western United’s licence was placed on a 12-month hibernation by the APL after club owner Jason Sourasis faced financial issues, including a $15 million dispute with the ATO.

The matters relating to the club have been resolved in court.

Western United’s academy and community football programs continue to operate.

Football Australia issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon confirming that all clubs, with the exception of Western United, had met the criteria set out by the First Instance Body.

Western United have until 5pm on Friday to appeal.

The club published a statement on its website stating it was looking at avenues for appeal.
