I think the key word in jrvk's reply is appears. What I'm seeing from ASEAN's proposals doesn't include us at this stage, although they do have 3 invited guests listed and division 2 will be held in one of those guest's country. Not sure if it's our reluctance to play or ASEAN's reluctance to have us play. I will add that in principle I'm against putting players into the national team purely to force them to play for us.

Isn't Australia literally part of ASEAN? I can't imagine they would knock us back from competing if so. Also, I'm not advocating "forcing" anyone to play for us; they can make up their own minds as to whether they accept the call up.

They appear to not want us in their tournaments. Nevertheless the U23 Matildas play in the ASEAN Championship against senior national teams (and won last year), surely our youth teams could also play in it.

That would be fantastic for capping players. Keep it formally the senior team with a commitment to keep it u23. Similar to Aus A concept.

Yes we are a part of ASEAN Football Federation, but when we joined as a full member a few years back it was recognised that we wouldn't compete in the senior tournament as at that point the other teams were a long way below us in abilty. I don't think that's the case today as some of those teams are more than capable of getting a result against us now but we still aren't competing. We have nothing set in concrete for the September/October 4 match window so unless something significant turns up soon I think it would have been a missed opportunity not to compete in the ASEAN Cup. Maybe we are trying to convince 3 quality teams to visit here for a 4 team tournament but that's really the only thing I would prefer to the ASEAN Cup.

The main reason why ASEAN don't want us to be playing in their tournaments is because the standard of the Socceroos and Matildas is too high compared to most of the teams in the region but agree that it could be good for the Olyroos to be playing in the ASEAN Championship and follow suit with the under-23 Tillies so at least they're getting game time outside of the Olympic qualifying cycle.

It would be amazing to have that! The benefits would be that they’re playing against senior opposition, playing a full tournament as a team and they would be capped.

I should also note that the U23 Tillies won it with a team comprised entirely of under-23 Dub players (and their biggest win was 9–0 over East Timor’s senior team). The Olyroos probably couldn’t do that as the SEA leagues are more on par with the ALM. It would be perfect for capping guys like Antonio Arena and James Overy though who are easily among the hottest prospects in ASEAN, and it could also be good for lesser known faces like Luka Didulica and Gianluca Okon.

Beyond what it gives for us, I think it also adds something for the ASEAN teams without just smashing them. It's probably a way to sell the concept.

We could also use the argument that Indonesia are recruiting diaspora from Australia and the Netherlands (including youth players) and that Indonesia plays in the tournament.

Oh yeah, how could I forget about the American/Australian Philippines teams?! They’re just as good at it as Indonesia, even better perhaps because they do it with the women too whereas Indo and Malaysia don’t really care that much about women’s football yet (I wonder what’s stopping them…).

China and Malaysia do a lot of naturalisation as well which is also what Qatar and the UAE do and are masters at (check their squads and you’ll see why Qatar aren’t rubbish anymore and have made the World Cup for the first time without hosting it).
