Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

In the ofc he has played with our B team. The point of the argument is how he would go with Uchida, Pasquali, Mikkola, Bonada etc running creating. I dont think he is up to it but he never got that opportunity.

For the sake of the argument we've seen Dovison look really good at times with the senior lads but as part of the broader B team he is largely innefective.
Perhaps NONE of our starting line up would look good if there were NO other senior players.

Soccer can often be the sum of the whole, rather than a collection of individuals.

I always look at Bentleigh under Anastasiadis as an example. I doubt there list was that great, but he got them playing as a well oiled machine at their peak.

I remember 2 games they played against us and Heidelberg where they won 4 nil .... in both cases it could have been worse!

I understand the point you are making but I dont think its going to change anything. Yes Dovison, for example, is not as effective a player when he doesnt have a senior midfield behind his action but he still manages to get in behind, he still manages to run up the flank with the ball, he still manages a shot or two despite not having the service and he still fights for every 50/50 ball despite CBs towering over him.. Singh, dribbles his own feet even when in acres of room... Maybe a year or two in the U23s would help him but he is NOT a senior player.

If we win tonight (assuming 1-0 win), we move to 24 points and a goal difference of +8. That ensures we remain top for one more week.

Assuming we lose against Heidelberg, George Cross and Avondale, we will be giving up 9 points and two of those 3 aforementioned teams are below us.

Heidelberg has the following matches: May 8th vs Hellas, May 15th vs Bentleigh, and May 22nd vs Green Gully. They should win all those matches and will be 8 points ahead of us by the end of May.

Oakleigh has the following matches: May 8th vs Dandenong Thunder, May 15th vs Dandenong City, and May 24th vs Preston. I'm assuming that Oakleigh will win two of those matches (lose to Preston), and will be 5 points ahead of us.

Hume City has the following matches: May 9th vs George Cross, May 16th vs Avondale, and May 23rd vs Altona Magic. I'm assuming Hume will draw against Avondale but win the other 2 matches. Assuming Hume loses tonight to Heideleberg, we will move 7 points ahead. That would mean would be equal on 24 points as us by Round 15.

Avondale has the following matches: May 9th vs Altona Magic, May 16th vs Hume City, and May 25 vs Hellas. I'm assuming that Avondale will draw against Hume but win the other 2 matches. Avondale who are 5 points behind us, but should go past us and be 2 points ahead of us.

Assuming South wins tonight and loses the next 3 matches, and the above assumptions become reality, the league ladder by the time of Round 15 when our OFC Pro League commitments have ended will look like the following:

Heidelberg - 32 points
Oakleigh - 29 points
Avondale - 26 points
Hume - 24 points
Hellas - 24 points (due to assumed inferior goal difference)

Hellas has no chance in clinching the Minor Premiership. Heidelberg is in the prime position to claim it.
Sheeesh the doom and gloom in here is suffocatiing... Are you both even going to bother turning up to matches for the rest of the season or are you convinced that we are destined for the dustbin of history? lol

Ive heard its not wise to count your chickens before they are hatched but you guys are going around stomping on all the eggs ffs. HAHAHAAHAHAHA

Last one at Lakeside tonight is a rotten egg. hahahahahahahaha

Swibel IS that big strong 6 yard box specialist #9 he just cant seem to play with his back to goal or to harass from the top like Sinisa wants
or front on to be fair.... he is proving a very lucky probable liability im truth
... Manny would help that, or another pacy striking option ... If we get rid of Swibel for somone like that old Greek bloke you are all frothing over it might make sense otherwise we don;t need another "marque" Euro κουραδα.
I Never said keep them all te i said teplace swibbel and partnership with Aguek for different options up front.

So he cant find a touch against 120kg CBs with fresh legs in OFC but is going to "do alright" in the NPL??? Sure whatever you say but I totally disagree.
I think he is still recovering from the last holi fesival... the bloke is a leg spinner plain and simple....dont know what anyone saw and decided this bloke could play anywhereon a football field...

Seemed to be a pre req for signing players in last window can argue same for all of them especially Lackay...
Lackay has pace at least and flair, although his dribbles are better in his head than on the field sometimes lol. I believe he will come good with senior minutes in him. He tries to do too much sometimes and when it pays off it looks good, when it doesn't, he doesn't give up and tries again THATS what I like about him... Give him time... Singh doens't seem to have the same mindset sadly.. Maybe Im wrong but thats how I see it.

So do all our under 23s doesnt mean they can play for this south team...

The point of my post was not be about doom and gloom. It was an outline what the league ladder will look like at the end of our OFC Pro League commitments.

Our U23s will not be able to compete against Heidelberg and Avondale. That's just a fact. George Cross are too physical, and will push the kids around. I still think we can come away with a point against George Cross.

With $450,000 on the table, I just can't see the club leaving players behind.

When we play a full first team of seniors players, the only team that can compete against us is Heidelberg. Everyone else we have the measure of. Teams will look to strengthen in the mid season transfer window. We have to ensure we make the necessary signings to win the league and go well in the Australian Cup. I still think we have the best team in the league. With a few tweaks, we could be even better.

I know mate... it was said with tounge in cheek.. I guess it really all boils down to squad management. I am yet to be 100% convinced that we are throwing these 3 matches away.. If Im wrong Im wrong but I am hoping Im not. :)

I get the appeal of gambling for $450k but perhaps we should consider how much money we put in the pokie machine?

I wouldnt bother with this next season.

The real money with less disruption is advancing deep into the Australia cup, you knock over a few A league teams in front of big crowds at Lakeside it would make the ofc look like loose change.

100% this... I'm not convicned even FIFA will persist with this.. I was sceptical and Ok it was fun, might even go to the final if we make it but lets focus on get back on top in Australia first eh?

I would continue this for another year. The competition has FIFA funding guaranteed for the next 4 years.

My only complaint is that we should have recruited another 3-4 quality players to assist with all these extra matches. That for me is the key learning. No point relying on your U23s to fill the gaps. Players like Shalamanov-Trenkov, Singh and other mentioned have proven not good enough. You need decent players that will share the workload. Otherwise you expose yourself like we did against Oakleigh, Dandenong Thunder and Hume City. We got away with it against Altona Magic and Green Gully.

See i on the other hand believe that the sqaud shiyld be tweaked to allow for both! Its the travel back and forthbof the squad that killed us.. field a sol8d team in both.. win the championship again amd w3 dont have to worry about this till round of 32 and by then ofc is finished... i think all are doable with the right squad...
Win in this year and perhaps let Sam do the OFC with a lighter squad and team stays here for the rest with Sinisa?
Thats how i would approach it.

And how will we do that unless we granted (insert laughs here) a green light to enter the AL? And as we know pigs will fly before that happens.... is that not the actual reason why we are here at ofc? .. all focus should be on this and rightly so, just need a squad yhat can do both doesnt need much more than depth we have now just better recruitment choices imo
