General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2025/26 season

I just had a terribly awkward moment with the owner of the company I'm working at.

I'm talking to a bloke about my weekend and said I went to a league blah blah and he is interested he wants to go to games. So then he comes over says who you follow in proper football.

I'm thinking he meant like epl so I explain I go for boro 😂

Then he mentions afl and walks off in disgust. Like I don't care about football/soccer and I didn't even get to tell him I go for the even more pathetic Carlton 😂
They hate it even more when you say "I go for the Williamstown Seagulls, have been waiting decades to get promoted to AFL"...

I have that conversation at least twice a week. I love it.
A few years ago I went a step further and just started saying I don't have an AFL team. Which is true.
The level of confusion on their faces is fantastic. They can't comprehend someone born and raised in Melbourne and not having an AFL team.
Interestingly, I do however come across plenty of people that follow the AFL, but also have some knowledge of current events in the EPL (or at least keep some tabs on results). They don't have any interest/knowledge of AL nor NPL though.

I tell them I bleed blue and white for the mighty South Melbourne...
They inevitably ask "Swans?" to which my reply of "nah Hellas" confuses the shit out of em....

It's quite a interesting conversation because at the end of the day everyone has their passions but for Australians sport can be so touchy. But if I said I read harry Potter people won't be like pfft lord of the rings is better I dunno.

Like if someone told me they played a obscure sport like hockey or fencing I'd find it really interesting

game of thrones fans got weirdly testy towards tolkien fans on my youtube recommendations for some reason

DUDE..... you compare Tolkien to some frumpy Karen writing about fairies tales in a boarding school?!?!?!? for shame... hahahahahahahahahahahaha

People keep saying that such and such new author is better than tolkien, it is like looking for a criketer better than bradman, or a physicist better than einstein

I suspect the horrors of the ww1-ww2 era for some reason produced a bunch of great people and we would need equal horrors to produce people of the same calibre.

If that's the trade off, I'm happy to live in an era of relative peace and ai slop

There are plenty of authors better than Tolkien, none with the ability to generate whole universes with history, language, culture and ethnography all inside his head though..

I was walking down my street towards the tram with my Blue and White scarf the other week. Some bloke across the road saw it, and called out 'Go North'. I responded with 'Wrong Code!'

We used to go camping 2-3 decades ago up in the Victorian Alpine high country with the guys... One of us had a Greek flag in the car and we hung it outside the tent as a camp "mascot" joke sort of thing.. The ranger came past and said ... "Bloody North Melbourne are shithouse" and left without a word... Rednecks are great.

To use very American examples, it’s like when people compare new rappers to 2Pac, Biggie Smalls or Eminem or saying Bronny James will be better than LeBron James (based on what we’ve seen he probably won’t be). People (particularly Americans) do it so often but it’s just stupid. You can’t judge someone new to a literal great.
