2026 World Cup Squad

A bit sad to think back to last season's A League season when four young Aussies topped the goal scoring charts, leading to them all signing with overseas clubs. It seemed we had some great prospects. One of those is Segecic, who we have lost to Croatia. One is Botic who I don't think had done a great deal, before a long-term and ongoing injury lay-off. One is Milanovic who I understand has lacked form and just isn't able to get any game-time. Only A Goodwin has been showing positive signs and is conceivably an outsider to be selected for the World Cup.

Yeah that’s the risk with Aussie talents. Sometimes it just doesn’t work and sometimes it fucks their career. Cortnee Vine for example in the women’s I would argue moved too late and now she’s barely playing for club or country.

Noah Botić is injured, Nick Milanović has been average and even Adrian Segečić while having moments of impact hasn’t solidified a starting spot at Portsmouth yet (and he picked playing one tournament for Croatia over a whole career with us).

Legend in her own mind.

To be fair the selection policy has played a part in Cortnee Vine not getting game time altogether for the Matildas but definitely agree that moving too late does play a part also especially since clubs are starting to turn more towards youth prospects instead.

Cort? I mean, she’s essentially a hero in all our minds after that penalty against France at the World Cup but her leaving Sydney FC for NC Courage didn’t work. She sits on the bench week in week out and had to take an international break for her mental health and to focus on getting club minutes. She briefly returned to the Matildas but then missed the Asian Cup and the FIFA Series because she’s hardly playing.

America has been cursed for Aussies (except goalies) in the women’s game in the past few years. Aussies used to flock to the NWSL, now they wanna be as far away as possible. Even in the USL Super League where Maddy McComasky and Sophie Harding went (and where Cortnee Vine’s girlfriend Charlotte McLean went on loan to (to Tampa Bay Sun) after she barely touched the grass at the Courage) Aussies have failed. Charlotte’s back in Australia now, Maddy got delisted by Fort Lauderdale United so now it’s just Soph at FL United and Morgan Aquino at DC Power (a goalie so uncursed). The NWSL is just Cort and Mackenzie Arnold (and Macca is the only one who gets minutes, again a goalie for Portland Thorns) since Kaitlyn Torpey went to Newcastle United in the WSL2.

The men’s game is similar without a specific America curse. Some guys just don’t click overseas. Look at Dan Arzani, Nick Milanović, Ryan Teague or Kusini Yengi for example.

To be fair Milanovic has struggled with injury and since moving to Cerezo Osaka on loan Kusini Yengi's only managed to get 52 minutes of game time across four matches before sustaining his injury that's likely going to rule him out for the year.

Milanovic had some serious red flags that he could handle even a small step up

Botic had his customary aussie aborad injury

Sega never did his acl in his first season proving he isnt really aussie

My memory of Courtney Whine was her complaining she had to walk 10 metres from the CCLC carpark to the Stadium - the Mariners were disrespecting her apparently.

Hate to quote Trump here but I think that’s fake news.

The car park was 500 metres away and the complaint was about players not having parking.

The CCLC carpark is directly across the road on ground level. They had a specific cordoned off area and a specific players entrance. Clubs are required to provide parking for the team bus - she decided she wanted to drive and the club went out of their way to accommodate her.

I guess she expected VIP parking under the bridge or even through the fence with the absolute few spots where the TV truck sits.

I wanted to park there to go to the station for work and even as a member the security just new I wasn't there for a 9am pokies session! When I came home last I was bemused at the boom gates at the station car park but something had to be done.
