It’s low-key hard to pick the best 11 but it’d be very different to now by 2030.

For example, of our current best three goalies, the youngest is Jada Whyman who is 26 now and will be 31 in 2030. Given we only have four keepers overseas at all it’s the position I’m most worried about since Dub goalies aren’t all that good besides a few young stars who are alright and Heather Hinz who is American (I’ve suggested naturalising her but while she loves living here she’s that good that I don’t know if she’d stay the full five years; she also posted on her Insta story “back to the States I go 🥺 🩵” which could just mean seeing family but could also mean leaving this season). Even Courtney Newbon (Melbourne Victory’s Tasmanian keeper and the reigning Golden Glove winner, who has no Matildas caps at any level) will be 30 in 2030. The most obvious choice for goalie by then would be Ilona Melegh, but we need three for a squad. If Heather stays and is naturalised here then she would be our starting one.

We have to remember 2030 is a long time away. Prime players like Ellie Carpenter, Clare Hunt and Clare Wheeler will be in their early 30s while up and coming players like Kyra Cooney-Cross, Wini Heatley, Amy Sayer and even uncapped Annalise Rasmussen will be in their prime in their late 20s. The old guard will be at the end of their career if not retired by then as they’ll all be in their late 30s (for example Sam Kerr will be 37) while the older old guard will be definitely retired and in their early 40s (for example Michelle Heyman will be 42 and Aivi Luik who is basically internationally retired will be 45). The young stars will be key, like Indi dos Santos, Daniela Galić, Shelby McMahon, Willa Pearson, etc who’ll still only be in their early 20s (Willa Pearson will be still only 20 by 2030).

So yeah, it’s extremely difficult to predict who’ll be there. Between now and the World Cup there should be major changes in the squad and even the starting 11. I don’t think Caitlin Foord should start for the Matildas anymore (she already doesn’t start for Arsenal and is likely leaving in June). Hayley Raso’s position is under threat too given her lack of minutes at any club she goes to. Alanna Kennedy and even Steph Catley may even be out of the 11 by the World Cup next year. If we don’t win the Olympics then none of the Golden Generation will have ever won anything in green and gold except Sam Kerr (who was in the 2010 Asian Cup squad).

Same goes for the Socceroos too by the way. Defections, injuries, personal choices, etc come into play for every team on Earth (defections for any non-homogenous country I should say, e.g. North Korea won’t have any defections at all because very few foreigners or immigrants live there).

Yep - increased font above I agree why I palmed the W choices to you :)
Even the Roos - 4yrs off so much can/could happen.

Can we not make fun of Africans for being genetically different? Being trans or even gay/lesbian is illegal and dangerous in most African countries (other than some like Cape Verde or South Africa). I agree that women’s sports should be played by women’s athletes but Barbra Banda is a woman.

Anyway, African women’s football has a LONG way to go before it can reach the level of the Matildas. The loss to Nigeria and near loss to Zambia were major upsets. These teams are still fighting for proper facilities and Nigeria win AFCON all the time (though Morocco came close last time and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana won it the time before).
I'm with you on this. I think it is disgraceful now, as it will be in 4 years. A prediction about bad behaviour is still a prediction though and I believe that the womens game in CAF will continue to get better as funding becomes better and they will defeat the Matildas in a major tournament at some stage. Lets see what is said when it happens.

We make semi's this world cup at the very least.

My one and only prediction. We will be the new team that everyone looks back on that got far in a tournament against all expectations, while playing truly terrorist football. Move over Greece and your Euro win. We're gonna be the new benchmark.

I can see that as a stretch - but not with the squads being talked about - too samey.

Socceroos:

Did we produce a standout attacker in the top 5 leagues of the world? No but im hope im wrong

How many players do we have playing regularly in the big 5? 5

How many playing in top 2nd tier clubs like Celtic, Feyenoord, Brugge etc? 4

How far did we get in the 2026 world cup? Round of 32

How far did we get in the 2027 Asian cup? Semi finals

Did we qualify directly for the 2030 world cup? Yes

Did Poppa get fired/leave, if so who is our coach? Kevin Muscat or a overseas coach that will get us playing attractive football

Who is our best xi? Beach Overy-Herrington-Circati-Bos Robertson-Okon Engstler-Mcgree Younis-Toure-Irankunda
What is our FIFA ranking? 30

Matildas

Have the crowds dropped or are they still going roughly as strong? Ok but not the same levels as before

Do we improve with respect to asia, fall behind or stay roughly the same level? Stay the same but fall behind at youth level

How far do we go at the World cup? Quarter-finals

How far do we go at the Olympics? Semi finals

Who is our best xi? Lincoln Carpenter-Hunt-Heatley-Torpey Cooney Cross-Wheeler-Fowler Raso-Kerr-Foord (but I hope for some new names)

What is our world ranking? 10

Youth teams

Did we qualify for the 2028 Olympics? No (only because the current format makes it harder to qualify given only 2 teams can qualify now not because we lack of the quality of Youngers tbh)

How many of the 2 u20 world cups did we qualify for in this period? 1

How far did our u20 teams go in the world cup if we made it? Round of 16

How many of the four u17 world cups did we qualify for? 2

How far did we go in these world cups? Round of 16

A league

Have crowds recovered, plateaud or declined compared to today? Recovered but not much

How big is the next tv deal? Not sure hopefully an improvement though

Does the A league expand? How many teams? Which areas? 4 teams (Canberra, 2nd team in Brisbane, 3rd Victorian team, North or Central QLD team I think QLD can hold up to 3 teams tbh) also get to 16 teams split into 8 teams for a pro-rel conference style system :D)

Do any grassroots clubs get promoted? No

Do Western United come out of hibernation? If so do they finish their stadium? They could be the 3rd Victorian again but I can see South Melbourne or Preston Lions in the a-league instead

How much is transfer revenue per club in 2030? 1 million but not sure about this part lol

What is our best result in the ACL Elite? Round of 16

Do we win the ACL 2? Yes

Does the Salary cap survive? What about the salary floor? No I think it be replaced by financial fair play model so the domestic transfer system can be introduced as the FA/APL want the clubs to get bigger transfer fees from overseas plus more money goes down the pathway into the grassroots

What major changes do you see happening in the A league (open ended question) I kind of answering it in the a-league expand question but I can see the possibility of the league going to 16 teams, then they will split the league into 8 teams for pro-rel conference style of system instead of a NRL/AFL system league system where we mirror overseas leagues

Will the women's a league go full time pro? Yes (And it has to as well)

NST

Is there a home and away NST? Yes

Does the championship continue beyond the current 5 year commitment? Yes

Which team comes from no where to become a regular qualifier for the championship? No particular names but I can see some clubs from NPL 2 or even 3 clubs make their way over time to push the big names into those places

Does Berwick United make the championship or NST? Yes (because it will be a great story)

Will it get sponsorship and a TV deal? Yes

Will the FA commit to a roadmap for promotion/relegation (even hybrid or ad hoc forms that include off field criteria or make relegation for apl clubs difficult like the a1/a2 model). Yes the APL model might be the way forward for future expansion to include the NST/Championships clubs

What do crowds look like in the championship and NST (assuming both happen) Similar to the a-league for most games but slightly lower average

Who is the most successful club in this era? APIA because they got a great junior set up to make it happen

OFC Pro League

Will the OFC pro league allow South Melbourne to qualify for the club world cup? No because they are not part of the OFC

Will there be more Australian teams in the OFC Pro league? Maybe

Forum

How many posts per day will there be (current around 120-150) 120

How many members will we have (current around 450) 400

How many regular posters will we have (currently around 55). 50

Any other wild predictions? Australia will continue to fight for duel national players, I think we will see more young players through given the opportunities that exist here and overseas....And after FIFA had to step in we finally get a home of football i.e centre of excellence where it replicates the AIS for both male and female players
Here is mine lol

That's why I mentioned hopefully some new talent comes in and ultimately replace them, we don't want to experience this again with the Socceroos where we struggled to replace Kewell and Cahill.
doesn't look as bad as the pim/holger era to be fair given some of our best are still youngish.

We have plenty of new talent who can be promoted from the Matildas farm system progressively from the November/December international window this year through January 2028, with a view to replacing the old guard completely by the time the LA 2028 Olympics get underway.

Yeah she’s only got… 172 caps? Well, at least she’ll only be… 37?
She'll be 36 by April 2030 as she doesn't celebrate her birthday until mid-July and if we field her every match then Emily van Egmond will be the first double centurion Australian footballer which is inevitable given the current selection policy.

Caitlin Foord probably won’t start at the 2027 World Cup? Her and Hayley Raso will be quite old by 2030.
The 2027 Women's World Cup will most likely be Caitlin Foord, Hayley Raso and Sam Kerr's last major tournament before the new look forward line of Skye Halmarick, Shelby McMahon and Holly McNamara starts at the LA 2028 Olympics.

True. Even if they wanna keep her she’ll have retired by then for sure. She’s already got a wife and a daughter.
