A-League Mens 25/26 - Round 24

Yeah I understand, but there ARE, or at least Im told there are, 5,000 that will always follow Melbourne Victory or Sydney FC or whatever other Aleague club... Its been 20 years for these franchises Im sure they are onto the second generation by now?

I dont think its the problem of if/how these clubs are inherited (or whether the connection is ethnic, religious, geographical or just because they are glory hunters). Its the volume of that connection.

Soccer will ALWAYS be a second tier sport in this country at best. Those trying to monitize it just have to accept reality and do their best to bring everyone under the same tent
Thinking back to the very big crowds Melb Victory used to get 20 years ago, you would think there would be 2nd generation Victory fans now.
However looking at their crowds now, I won't hold my breath. So we will have to assume that the club hasn't really made that big imprint that they were hoping for.

I seem to recall their biggest drawing seasons where when they played at Docklands. They started tapering off when they moved to the MRS.

Going by that, it seems Victorians really do like oval type grounds, and not the proper grounds for Football.

When England won the Rugby Union World Cup in 2003 rugby's media went on the war path....

Englush Rugby was going to blow football out of the water...."there's only one game in town and all that....'

But while there was a slight surge in interest it never happened!

Football's century-long head start created massive infrastructure, grassroots participation, and cultural dominance across all classes and regions. Rugby stayed more middle-class, southern, and school-tied, with far fewer pro clubs, lower club attendances, and limited weekly TV draw. One World Cup win couldn't close that structural gap.
A world cup win for the Socceroos (no not for the Matildas it has to be the mens team, people can get angry all they like its the truth) will make the sport explode in popularity here despite the head start AFL and NRL have there though.

Yes AND no, club fortunes wax and wane... They will be back again one day... As an example from my very own club, I saw people come back to Lakeside after nearly 2 decades these past Aus Championship games....

It would also be the biggest story in the history of football and probably the history of sport....

The soccer-hating media would have a full-on meltdown....

Columnists choking on their pies, headlines screaming “This Changes Nothing!” while desperately boosting AFL/NRL grand final previews. Talkback callers: “Real footy doesn’t need penalties or diving!” 😂

But yes, that's the kind of event that you would need to happen in order to put football on the same pedestal as the 2 majority interest codes in Australia.

I dont ask for much in life but something like this would shake the pillars of Hell... HAHAHAHAHA

City have 3 wins in a row - I think?

If Melb City make the finals, they will likely play the knockout game away, but are getting more of their experienced players back from injury. Given their battle hardened ACL performances, I think they could go all the way.

City have done well in close ACL matches and have depth. Can't believe as good a CB as Delbridge is, playing a few Socceroo games, he is third choice CB? I would rotate him with Fereyrra a bit.

City only had Younis and Schreiber, as young players, in the starting eleven against Nix.

2-0 victory is another decent result. City are a good team in possession.
Nix flattered us and didn't put away their chances, although the last 20 mins weren't to bad.
I think Shreiber has been better than Teague and Younis has been a great loan. Maybe this is going to be Souprayens last season and Delbridge will be taking over?

Dellbridge is not that young! and he doesn't have the game reading ability that Souprayen has.

I quite often watch games from France's N1 League (Le Championnat National 1) on YouTube which is the third tier of the French national football pyramid...

It's a fairly watchable and a decent standard of football. Below the A League and probably the equivalent of the NSW and Victorian NPL top divisions.

One game I saw the other day was between league leaders Dijon and Bourg-en-Bresse Péronnas.

Dijon are a good sized club with a 15K capacity ground who were formed in 1998 and have had one season as high as Ligue 1 and a few good seasons in Ligue 2 and I think that’s where they're heading back to next season.

The crowd for the N1 game against Bourg-en-Bresse Péronnas.was 1,445....

This got me thinking about the crowds average's for Ligue 2 which is perhaps the equivalent of the A League in terms of club's size, talent, football quality, entertainment product and all the usual cross-league football metrics....

Here's the average crowds in Ligue 2 for the last 5 seasons or so.

2025–26 (as of April): ~7,935 – 8,247 per match

2024–25: 7,386 per match

2023–24: 8,649 per match

2022–23: 8,746 per match

2021–22: 5,542 per match (slightly low because of the end if covid-19 where some restrictions were still alive)
