The Unofficial Australian Football Club Database/Pyramid

Are there only going to be five teams in CPL1 this year?
Some clubs are entering multiple teams - ladder is showing 7 teams from 5 clubs (two teams for ANU and Weston).

Griffith league is doing something similar (8 teams from 7 clubs, but some of them are essentially third grade teams as firsts and reserves would be playing in Wagga - such as Yoogali FC and Griffith City)

Ohhh hang on. So is there no CPL this season and it goes straight from NPL to the Open leagues?

Yep - CPL was disbanded and shifted clubs either (mostly) into NPL, so of the 16 clubs that were in either division last year:
  • Yoogali (kicked out from Capital Football completely - senior players have mostly joined Griffith City FC in the Wagga league and recently won the Riverina Knockout Cup)
  • Gungahlin United (folded)
  • Wagga City Wanderers (originally to be kicked out of Capital Football completely, but agreement made for juniors still to play in NPL Youth - seniors have done something similar to Yoogali/Griffith City, but I can't remember the club, though I have Young Lions in my head)
  • ANU (no junior base, so apparently elected not to try and get into NPL with the review)
  • West Canberra Wanderers (relegated to Open leagues)
Apparently Promotion/Relegation will come back after this season by virtue of:
  • Club applies for promotion from Open leagues prior to start of season (eg, they must meet off-field criteria)
  • Should that club be approved AND they finish first, they will be promoted to replace the last placed club in NPL
  • Should that club be approved AND they finish second AND the club that finishes first does not meet promotion criteria, they will play-off with the club placed last in NPL to determine the final NPL slot for the following season.

so once they approve my latest updates - I think I have every league that has so far announced draws for 2026 added in (not assigned to each club, but assigned to at least one so that it's easy to add leagues to clubs now)

just missing at the moment:
NSW - Lachlan, Lithgow, Western Plains
NNSW - Newcastle, Hunter/Macquarie (both available, just deciding whether to split Friday and Saturday leagues), Namoi
VIC - Metro, Geelong, Gippsland, South West, Sunraysia

I've decided to make the call this year that Albury-Wodonga Football Association and it's leagues are part of the NSW pyramid officially. Their website states they are an affiliate of FNSW, and no clubs (other than Murray United - the representative club of the Association) entered into the Dockerty Cup (or the Australia Cup at all). Also, FV has moved all their affiliate regions to the single Dribl fixture page, and Albury is not part of that, and has their own Dribl (as is standard for FNSW associations).

As their clubs entered the Riverina Cup, and were mostly beaten by the FWW clubs, I've placed them at the same levels as Griffith (Division 1 sits underneath the Wagga Pascoe Cup as the 'Branch' Premier League)

As per the Women's NST thread, I've decided to start a second database following the Women's Pyramid - have currently done the A-League Womens / W-League, and ACT/Capital Football dating back to 2016 (including for the Men's update as outlined underneath the spreadsheet below).

Also taking an opportunity to expand the mens one as much as I can too:
  • Australia Cup will have it's own sheet within the document now - I will list under each year a state, which will mean they've entered the Australia Cup that year in that state. The reason I'm doing that, is because there is potential for some clubs to enter under one member federation one year, and then another one in the next (eg, if Yoogali SC form a proper mens side next year, they may possibly take part through Waratah Cup in NSW - whereras previously it would be via ACT - so it's something I wanted to gather data for.
  • I'm going to spend some time state by state, association by association, finding websites (such as MyGameDay) going as far back as I can for both Mens and Womens and getting the leagues database sorted. For example - starting with ACT (alphabetically, and also the smallest member federation), Pre 2022-current is available via Dribl, and 2011-2021 is available via MyGameDay)
  • I again am also tempted - whilst it doesn't exist - list the clubs in a separate "Cups" sheet for the Womens pyramid that took part in the each respective state's Cup Competition (should they exist - eg, ACT's Federation Cup, NSW's Sapphire Cup) to sort of gauge who would be taking part in a Womens Australia Cup if it did exist, etc.
  • I'm going to try and tier the community level / non-competitive adult levels. I'm thinking 3 tiers, essentially:
    • 01. Competitive Youth (eg, ACT will be NPL > Junior League. NSW would be Boys Youth League One > Two > Three > Association Junior Leagues
    • 02. Masters
    • 03. Miniroos
  • There will also be an aspect of adding in Churches Leagues - essentially, there are a small number of clubs that have come from Churches Leagues into the main setup, or vice versa - so will need to be listed as such. However, only clubs that have been part of the official setup will be listed.
  • Will also re-iterate that School based teams will only be listed in the event that they also run a senior side (either competitive or perhaps in Masters as well).

Wow doing the cup on this is intriguing.

I've gone back to the inception of the Federation Cup in ACT (what is used for Capital Football's Australia Cup preliminaries), and marked who (To the best of records found) has taken part in which years (back to 1962), and in a separate doc I've gone back to the inception of Capital Football/ACT in terms of League structure.

Having filled in Capital Football's league structure back to 2011 at the moment, there have been 42 clubs in existance on the men's/boys side. According to available record, 82 clubs have taken part in the Federation Cup since 1962 (there's I believe 3 seasons where only the final is available, and not the whole bracket) - and surprisingly, there is 5 clubs that haven't ever competed in a Federation Cup: 1 is a juniors only club, so that's understandable. Two have since folded/merged into others, but there are two clubs that have never taken part still in existence today - Belsouth, and Yass.

Belsouth was founded in 1970 (according to the club), but records indicate they have only fielded senior sides since 2012.
Yass, on the other hand, were formed in 2002/2003 (as in indoor focused club) and appears to have set up as a junior side playing in Goulburn, until shifting to Capital Football in 2006, and fielding their first mens side in 2007.

There seems to be 3 clubs who have entered every season since 1979 (although 2001 only lists the Final, and neither of these clubs reached it): Canberra Croatia, Canberra Olympic and Belconnen United.

In fact, Croatia appears to have competed in every edition since 1962 (the first one), with the exception of 2001 (only the final participants were listed), and 1969 (same as 2001, so they most likely did take part).

One other thing I found interesting - and I didn't know this, is in 2005, despite competing in the Goulburn North East FA's North Eastern Soccer League (Shepparton, Cobram, etc), Hanwood FC and Yoogali SC (from Griffith, NSW) competed in the ACT Federation Cup that year.

Hmmm... given how I've seen some of squadi play out for NNSW this year, I may have to actually bite the bullet and count some (if not all) the club splits that are in NNSW Australia Cup preliminaries as fact (Eg, Mayfield United Juniors and Seniors being two separate clubs) - would mean updating some of my totals and additional locations
