Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Vpl 1 and 2 don’t count in that rule only state league clubs
Only when it is a NPL club vs a state league club.. not VPL... at least thats what they said during the draw...

Thanks for that clarification. That would mean we host Bulleen in Round 5 at Lakeside and Port Melbourne in Round 6 if we progress and they knock off Beaumaris. If Port Melbourne is knocked out, then we would play that Round 6 fixture at Beaumaris' ground. Just glad we are not playing on that synthetic surface at the Veneto Club.

correct as far as I understand it... Port have been shocking this year so they may indeed get rolled by Beaumaris...

I might be slightly controversial, but I think its a smart move by the club not to show which players have already departed for Fiji just yet. Keeps the opposition in the dark on which players would play.

My 2 cents for line ups for both matches across the weekend based on the rumours circulating:

Preston match
Lopez
Painter-Andrews
Jankovic
Eliopoulos
Lampard
Pasquali
Giannakopoulos
Mikkola
Uchida
Bonada
Swibel

Bench - Saristavros, Angelatos, U20s Goalkeeper, Papadimitriou, Killick

Auckland match
Charlston
Inglese
Coveny
O'Sullivan
Skapoulas
Menelaou
Leech
Cocks
Pope
Dovison
Singh

Bench - Lackay, Mesorouni, Shalamanov-Trenkov, Gorr-Burchmore

Straight from the Pres mouth after the Dandy City game. Going all out vs Preston does not care about the Oaks game. Wants to focus on winning the OFC and win the Aus Cup this season due to the finiancial benefit which comes with it..
If you win the OFC Pro League its $450,000 and the Australia Cup is $50,000.

But the added benefit of winning the Australia Cup is in the potential qualification for the AFC Champions League Two competition, where appearance prize money is $300,000 USD (approx $425,000 AUD). Each win attracts $50,000 USD (approx $71,000 AUD). With 3 wins, you could amass $450,000 USD which equates to $638,000 AUD. If South were to qualify for the Round of 16, then that's another $80,000 USD (approx $113,000 AUD) in addition.

Don't forget that Hellas won $100,000 from winning the Australian Championship.

Or focus on NPL Victoria competition for $25,000 and Dockerty Cup for $10,000.

Its interesting then if we dont care about the npl why isnt our best team playing Auckland on Sunday?

I get the financial incentives but the reality is the npl is our week in week out bread and butter. If a weak South team loses 5-0 at lakeside to oakleigh next week it may not bother the president but it will bother a lot of other people.

The way i see it you wanna be involved in all those comps, have 20 quality players at your disposal that can allow you the best chance to win all games.

You are right. We are at a minimum 3-4 quality players short of balancing both competitions. That’s one of the key learnings the Football Department must see when planning for next year.

First lets make sure we get the planning right for the upcoming championship in the mid season window bc thats going to have a lot stronger competition this time round.. depth building starts from this upcoming window and extends through to next years comps!

MY impression isnt that we dont care about NPL, its that we have to be strategic and sacrificing some points to achieve the bigger goals isnt the end of the world.. taking top spot feom Auckalnd changes little for us, a win against Preston is a prestige thing more than a necessity at this stage imo. Its the biggest NPL Vic game but end of the day its just an NPL game and most fans know that, still dont want to lose thia though!

And if we lose this? Does it mean we lose anything in the grand scheme of things? We can deal with them when it matters, especially if this allows us to get the much needed points in OFC, again its a bigger picture thing... not that i want to lose to them but i can forgice us playing a lighter team if it means max points in OFC.

You are spot on, here is the real essence, and the question still remains how they sat down and thought that this season we had anywhere near enough quality on our squad to cover everything?

With the players who didn't play today vs Preston seems the squad will be:
Charleston, Trenkov, painter-andrews, Burchmore, inglese, coveny, skapoulas, meneleu, Leech, pope, messarouni, cocks, swibel, Lackay, Singh.

15 Sinisa was flying out tonight so will be there then some of the other senior players will fly out tomorrow or Monday also
