Socceroos vs USA 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺 🇺🇸

They beat uruguay 5-1 and lost 5-2

Crazy swings of form

Strange game - without Valverde and Nunez - fairly even possession but usa 5 goals from 7 on target. Uruguay 1 from 2. So Uruguay faily toothless without their 6 of their regular starters in with
Federico Valverde
Nicholas de la Cruz
Rochet - first choice keeper
Christian Olivera
Darwin Nunez
Nicolas Fonseca

Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa utilized a severely depleted 17-man roster for this friendly. The absence of Federico Valverde
(€130M), Darwin Núñez (€65M), and Ronald Araújo (€55M) reduced their squad value by over €250 million compared to their full-strength 2024 Copa América team.

Against Belgium 2 from 4 on target - Belgium 5 from 11.

whenever I see usa concede it is always from poor effort areas

A lot of people worry about dual nationals not being as committed. I guess the cold blooded thing to do would be to lock players in and then play games with them to get them 100% committed. In any case, managing a multicultural country like australia is going to require a lot of skill from both coach and the fa

Going back to the US - If they lose to Portugal in this window as well as Senegal and Germany in June they will enter the World Cup having not won a competitive match against a Top-30 Elo team in two years.

Law of averages then says they'll beat us 3:0 with a heroic home performance. I'm in so many minds about this game. It feels like a playoff. If we can start well and ease in we'll get a few chances but I also fear if it's goalless at 70 we'll be the one's to break and they'll end up scoring some cutback or deflection and box scramble.

Surely Poch can see their centre back woes. I really don't now whether to start Velupillay or Irankunda? If they lead then they'll be deeper which creates problems for Irankunda but we should also have him on as a long as possible against their high line.

Uruguay, Belgium, Portugal, Senegal and Germany! They'll certainly be battle hardened going into the WC after these 5 matches. We could only dream of getting that calibre of opposition!

Given that Mexico just drew 0-0 with Portugal and they play Belgium next these two host friendlies may tell us something about the US true level.

USA with a 2-0 loss to Portugal in their second of two friendlies in Atlanta to close out the March international window which also sees them having still not won against top 30 sides for the past two years, in addition to losing eight straight matches against European opposition and being outscored by 22 goals to six.

They beat us last October and we’re ranked 27, so at least one win against a Top 30 nation in the last 2 years.

EDIT: They also beat Uruguay 5-1 last November, so not really sure why you think they haven’t beat a top 30 side in 2 years?

I'm sure the coaching staff know it but I'll put it out there (again):

Both sides they played shot and scored to the keepers right consistently. Low and close to the post (LH post if you're attacking) seems to be his blind spot.
Only one scored to his left side IIRC.

“"Belgium and Portugal have, in the top 100 players, several players playing that would be in that top 100" "We don't have that, which is why it was good to play against this type of team." -USA Manager Pochettino

Bruh can you imagine if Popovic said that shite? Sure it's TRUE, but you can't actually SAY it. And the USA have some really damn talented players. They should NOT be conceding as many goals and should be getting atleast some results against these teams.

USA I feel are under a real strain right now and I want nothing more than for us to really kick them in the teeth at the world cup.

The rankings were based on Elo as opposed to FIFA rankings though.

Right on mate this match against the USA has context for sure

Aside from spending hours playing WC 98. I remember seeing WC 2006 as a demo clip and Poland scoring against Germany with all the balloons pre game and the roar. Such a hyped game.

2014 version is remember scoring a 90min side volley with Jedinak against Croatia but the realism was the keeper half parried it into the side netting. Side volley, one bounce and parried in.

06 was great as you could do the whole qualifying run with any team.

Such a fun game that was - but 2010 is my go to for that

Did 2006 World Cup in my rewriting history with a FIFA 16 mod (it has every World Cup up to 2018, and euros up to 2016) - now that’s really something else

Table for Australia after Matchday 2 - interestingly, because the table is set to sort the traditional way - we'd actually be second in the group at this point, on account of defeating Turkey on Matchday 1

I'm going to sim the first 2 matchdays from New Zealand's group to view now (and results sim for Groups J K L) and then will update where things stand for the simulation in the Paraguay and Simulations threads

Skipped that as I didn't have a concole having moved between Australia and Germany and lived a very minimalist apartment life for a bit. Brought my slim PS2 over in luggage in 2011. Please don't tell me 2010 had Vuvuzelas?
