World Cup 2026 Australia thread

Of the groups, I think we are better placed than Sth Korea, Iraq and Qatar, so a positive outcome for us. Their groups will be very difficult to get out of.
South Korea will get through but can’t see the other two not finishing last. I have SK 2nd.

I have Japan topping their group, Iran in 2nd, us in 2nd, KSA in 3rd, Uzbekistan in 3rd, and Jordan last.

Who are we behind?
We will be last, wont be winning a match at all let alone nabbing a draw. Oh well I guess we just enjoy it for wot it is as we really never stood a chance of progression out of the group. We r just there to make up the numbers FACT!. The FA get a nice pay day and the players get a prepaid holiday cant ask for much more then that. The games them self should be looked at as warm up matches heading into the Asian Cup where we actually may progress out of the group.

You talking NZF surely. It was a serious question. I think the USA are false favourites. I am thinking Turkey tops the group.

Look at all the groups, there all loaded with killer nations no way you can tell me theres a easy groups. Paraguay are monsters and Turkey are ruthless, then you have the USA and playing on home soil in front of there fans. Socceroo's have it hard and I just doubt they will get anything out of the 3 games. Seriously look how dire we are in the 1st half of a football match. Teams would just smash us then cum the 2nd half it will have to be catch-up football and that's not how you win games at world cups. Playing good for 20mins wont work against these teams.
Out of the AFC nations competing - we would have to be up there with Jordan in coming last without a point.
Unless Poppa changes things up I stand by what I say.

I agree we cant go with we way we are playing now, There are probably 13 or 14 players that Popovic is picking that can affect a match. We potentially have 26 - the best squad that we have had since 2006 where we only used a small amount of players anyway. But we need to figure out how we can beat our Group D opponents. The when you do that pick the best team to do that and ten the best squad that can keep that going or at the very lest project anothe rproblem for them to answer.

Wil we win the group if Popovic does that - probably not. But we will be more enjoyable to watch and would undoubtedly finish higher than his current squads and tactics are showing. If he continues with playing for 60 mins without our best players in a World Cup the opposition will be out of sight by the time our best players get on the ground. If that happens he will be looking for a job after MD3.

Someone I heard say and I may have already quoted it - Popovic has a sports car in the garage but has dropped the keys. Maybe a bit harsh - but probably a decent grain of truth.

Much like Poch if the US fail. Neither seem to have a clue about how they can realistically play to win games. Paraguay are misery and Turkey have quality. The US have highlight reel players that a badly misfiring and are way behind the other 3 in ELO Rankings.

CONCACAF qualifiers earned it but bloody hell I've totally forgotten Haiti.

I guess it's just the traditionally bigger ones crashed.

Kudos to Cape Verde beating Cameroon to qualify.

Some teams that aren't there: Denmark, Poland, Costa Rica, Nigeria among others.

putting aside NM's comments I'm with you re our Grp who are our more difficult challenges.
Turkiye and Paraguay will have more skilled players than the USA.
The only thing the yanks have got is home advantage - I don't rate their squad/abilities compared to the other 2.
Anyway happy days not long to wait now looking forward to the stress.

I’m saying US, then us, Turkiye, and Paraguay. I’m not predicting many goals in the group.

US 1 Paraguay 1
Australia 1 Turkiye 1
US 2 Australia 1
Turkiye 1 Paraguay 0
Paraguay 0 Australia 1
Turkiye 1 US 2

US 7
Aus 4
Tur 4
Par 1
Turkey should be the favourites to top the group (I mean look at their squad), though it’s a home tournament for the US (though ticket prices will mean it’ll mostly be suits watching). Paraguay will be last unless Diego Gómez carries them.

Agree that the USA playing list is quite weak compared to those of Turkey and Paraguay, along with possibly the Socceroos also and they'll struggle to get results against the European and South American opposition, being lucky to get out of the group as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The USA will be lucky to get out of the group as one of the eight best third-placed teams because they weren't that convincing in the March international window and when they got the win over the Socceroos last October, they were able to adapt to the mountainous conditions in Colorado but this time round we'll be playing in conditions similar to those at Polytec Stadium so in theory they should be more favourable for us and the Socceroos should be able to either get a result or even get the job done.
