Australian Dual Nationals šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗšŸ³ļø

It's almost as if other countries see we pick them at 17 and then ask them over once they start to prove themselves.

As some have mentioned, we need a dedicated liaison for such matters. At this age the flexibility is understandable but good players are to be found at 18 years old.
Then they come crawling back at 20-25 lol.

Last night...

Liam Chipperfield started for Switzerland U21. Alexander Xie started for China U19 against Australia. Not 100% sure that he is eligible for Australia. He was living in Australia for a significant period of his childhood. Transfermarket has him dual listed. Currently plays for Stuttgart U19's. Anybody know for sure?

Xie was born in Australia but does not hold an Australian passport

Has Tristan Hammond stopped playing? Remember all the fear surround his Peru links? To be fair he'd probably be good enough for them the way they're going.

Sometimes 18 yos don't kick on though.

I agree we might need a liaison officer to scrutinise dual nationals.

Besides the identity stuff, some of the emotions re dual internationals comes from the sense that Oz is a weaker footballing nation and these European footballing heavy weights are taking players we need to be a proper footballing nation. However things are changing quickly.

Italy and Greece have now passed the point where their demographic decline is now almost irreversible. This means their pools of potential players are fast shrinking. Italy’s pool is a lot smaller than when they won the World Cup in 2006.

Due to politics many of these countries prefer migrant labor to pathways to citizenship. This means that not only is your pool of potential players is shrinking because of population decline, but also your working class population, from which most footballers come from, becomes mostly guest workers or migrant labors from places like the Phillipines, who have no path to citizenship. Add to this the large brain drain to Western Europe that countries like Greece and Serbia etc you are further shrinking the pool.

So these nations are increasingly going to have to look to diasporas for players.

Due to high migration, Oz is growing in population. This means yes that other nations will increasingly try to recruit players from our migrant communities, but the upside is that our population base is growing, and our nation has a larger potential pool of players (even with afl : nrl taking players.)

So long story short, we are in a transition period where it feels like powerhouses are taking our players but in the end sadly it is really about the decline of powerhouse footballing nations, due to population drop off. Recruiting players from overseas diaspora will only stave this for a while.

There definitely is an element that as international football starts to look more like club football the rich get richer and the poor get poorer

Demographic decline is noticeable in most western countries... Italy has more players and clubs now that it did in 2006, Greece definitely has more professional clubs in the top 3 tiers I can assure you...

Yeah USA and China dont know where to store all their WC trophies :P
European and South American countries will always have the best leagues and national teams but the MLS, SPL, etc (the CSL not so much) are becoming better in quality because of money. If certain players become too greedy and prefer money over success then they could end up being naturalised in those countries and called up for those countries’ national teams if eligible (like what China, Qatar and the UAE are already doing with average players, but America and Saudi could lure better players with bigger wages).

Take Jhon DurĆ”n for example. He couldn’t play for any other national team as he’s tied to Colombia but he went from being an emerging young talent at Aston Villa, even scoring the Premier League Goal of the Month for September 2024, to a player nobody talks about. He joined Villa in 2023, left midseason for Al-Nassr in 2025, went on loan to FenerbahƧe to be a squad player and now is on loan again at Zenit Saint Petersburg. He now hasn’t been called up for Colombia since June 2025. A massive career downfall at 22 all because he chose a dodgy pay check over a good career. Mind you had he stayed at Villa he woulda been playing Europa League football, could’ve potentially won the Europa League and qualified for the Champions League. But I guess playing with a nearly-retired Cristiano Ronaldo and living in a mansion with more rights than commoners is more important these days.

Totally. Agree with you that a large population base doesn’t automatically equal success. Also a rapidly shrinking youth population doesn’t make you stronger.

More making the point that the youth pop in countries like Greece, Italy and Croatia (not picking on them just noting they are some of the countries our dual nations are choosing) is declining rapidly, all three have passed the demographic ā€˜death cross’ and because of migrant labor (without a path, or at best a narrow path to citizenship) there isn’t an offset, so naturally they are going to increasingly have to look to their overseas diaspora.

Hence why people shouldn’t get stressed if other nations are looking to Oz dual national youth. It’s gonna happen more. And at the end of the day it’s a backhanded compliment. We have a multicultural society and are producing some good players that other nations want.

Oh I agree with your point but also, realistically, the effect of a diminishing population, is something that would need tog et far more critical before it starts to effect the playing pool of some of these countries. Why Is ay this is because we have countries with the entirety of their population (not just men between the ages of 16-29 say) being millions less yet still being competitive on the world stage...

When Greece or Italy or any other country with declining population growth gets down to less than a couple of thousand children born per year than sure thats a time to worry but until then I think there are other factors in play...
