Matildas friendlies in April 2026

I still think it’s good to give them a sneak peak at what senior football looks like.

Agree that there needs to be proper pathways between the Matildas farm system and the senior national team setup, and that we should be identifying the bolters so we can possibly fast-track them into getting caps at senior level and not leave them hanging.

It's good to be giving the bolters a sneak peek into senior international football but of course it is important to make sure that they have some experience within both club football and the Matildas farm system, which would mean in theory that a player like Shelby McMahon who already has experience at continental and international level would be prioritised over someone like Willa Pearson, for example.
 
I am seriously worried that we are not going to take the chance to use these games as an opportunity to test out some younger players, or get some more promising players into the fold. The Matildas golden generation is gone, the FA needs to accept that and not make the mistake of wheeling out players that realistically aren't of value to the National Team anymore just so they can score points with the casual fanbase.

I agree though I think we have a new Golden Generation coming through. A lot of casuals are attached to specific players though.

To be fair most of the casual fans are attached more to the well-known players like Sam Kerr and Steph Catley which means that the vast majority of the fanbase will not know half the squad that gets fielded for the April international window.

I’m gonna be honest: I like that we’ve changed it up but I think we shoulda changed up more.
  • Looks like a few big names have been rested which is good. We don’t need them for such low quality games. Kyra Cooney-Cross is out for the season for personal reasons (her mum). Clare Hunt, Teagan Micah and Jada Whyman are all injured.
  • Steph Catley may pull out due to the injury she picked up this morning.
  • Hopefully we actually use the full squad this time. Players like Morgan Aquino and Alex Chidiac didn’t play at all in the Asian Cup and we hardly saw Holly McNamara.
  • Lovely to see Izzy Gomezc Leticia McKenna and Jess Nash in the squad! Both ballers and hopefully looking at overseas moves next season.
  • How is Emily van Egmond still getting picked? She’s broken the record, can we just move on?
  • No Daniela Galić and no Annalise Rasmussen. Very disappointing given they’re dual internationals. Croatia will certainly be in contact with Dani though I think she clearly wants to be a Matilda (especially since her profile pic on Insta is her in the Tillies kit).
  • I assume Charli Grant and Cortnee Vine are out due to a lack of game time at club level? They both need moves. I’m a Spurs fan and a big fan of Charli and even though I’m happy with Martin Ho as our coach, I think he’s fucked up with not telling us what his plans for Charli are.

Holly McNamara only got 43 minutes all Women's Asian Cup campaign so hopefully she gets more game time this international window but she might pull out of the playing list after sustaining those head knocks in the AFC Women's Champions League quarterfinal unfortunately.

The Spurs women's head coach has not said anything about Charli Grant since the international break though and she may well be delisted come season's end if she isn't getting game time.
