Tilo got offered a contract by all three Sydney A-league sides for this season but opted to stay at United.

I hope he surpasses the Academies and A-League Clubs and goes straight to Asia or Europe. We might as well make money on the player, won't do that if he goes to an academy.
 
Tilo is a talented player performing well at NPL level - this year in a more comfortable position on the wing. It's interesting that it's becoming a trend for talented young players in NSW/QLD to turn down A-League academies and play in the first team/20s at NPL clubs. The players who have done it - Tilo, Mikey Pratezina (bit of a different situation), Emmett Shaw at Lions, Taj Sorensen at Logan, Noah Anderson, Oscar Gonzalez, Max Court - have all developed excellently. It's a positive sign on multiple levels - it shows there are different pathways for talented young players, it makes A-League academies have to compete for young players and step up their game in the process and, critically, I think it is a vital step towards a more open pyramid with pro-rel.

laugh if in a few years a 27 year old volpato says similar things to robbo

we did see yengi say robbo was "confused" and he did delete socceroos photos on his social media. But in any case brilliant to have him on board, love his game and great to see a 3rd generation socceroo

Wasnt just segecic setting the alarm bells off! Irankubda threatened to defect before arnie played him, triantis defected, robbo deleted his roos photos on instagram and bennie is threatening to defect

Unicorns like circati exist (who we apparently chased for 18 months anyway) we need to up our dual national game if we ever want players above championship level

Maybe patriotism, passion for the shirt, country above club etc is becoming old-fashioned. But then you watch a World Cup and you know, no it's still very much alive

Mind u some of those dual nationals seem to discover patriotism for oz after they declare. They do find it once they are in the fold, but a lot of dual nationals have complex national identities and fire for australia needs to be kindled and not just expected
 
The Volpato situation is so confusing. If you believe Popovic, Volpato reached out to express interest in representing Australia. A week later he's in the Italian media saying he dreams of playing for the Azurri.

Why reach out to Australia if that's how you're feeling? What happened? Did Popovic over-state or misrepresent the interest. Did the meetings go badly. Is Volpato playing games or backtracking. It's all so strange.

my guess is popovic reaching out meant italy did something to keep him in the fold as a response.

The drama might not be over, but I probably focus on other osaussies unless he expresses interest again (FA should however keep regular contact)

I'd also like to say, and this is something that has been very well documented by people in the know, that Volpato was told on multiple occasions by both Roma and Sassuolo to reject national team call-ups for Australia as it could risk harming his club career. Honestly, as much as it sucks, we're not going to see him until he is an established first team player. The only reason we're seeing Circati is because he was already a starter with Parma when he declared. They view him as a future captain and have a huge financial insensitive to want him playing international football. Volpato on the other hand is a squad player, turning down the Socceroos in favor of helping his chances of becoming a starter in Serie A is probably just more in his interests for now. I still think we'll see him eventually, but not till he either leaves Serie A, or becomes a starter with Sassuolo.

I just thought we’d have A-League players or players overseas that would get in first. Different position but coulda put Antonio Arena in. Would help court him.

Pretty much. Obviously you’d need money and/or connections to go and play for a European academy but I woulda thought he’d get picked up by an A-League side.

I have a theory that he’s just tryna make both sides happy. We know Paul Okon and Tony Popović went over to Italy to meet with him. I think deep down he knows he can’t make the Azzurri squad, but for some reason he thinks that there are people who think he can (there aren’t).

Overall though, we really need to put more effort into getting these guys in green and gold. We may even need a person in a job to court them!

I’d be interested to know if anyone knows of any other players other than the ones we already know of who could be eligible for Australia. We had no idea Ante Šuto’s dad was an Aussie until someone worked out he was signing for Hibs.
