Women's Asian Cup general discussion thread

Imo changing from w league to a league w was one of the biggest mistakes the suits made
I think the W-League name certainly had a special identity to it but A-League Women is probably more inclusive. Similarly the Y-League became the A-League Youth (before it disbanded), though the E-League remained with the same name rather than becoming the A-League E-Sports.

seriously this is pie in the sky stuff.
Aoyagi - wow over 10k followers and a reserve GK omg - christ my no name daughter has near that - I giggle and say do you know where all these so called followers come from ? tim buck 2 ? Japanese background, 5k could be people who hardly follow the game but the person let alone the amount who click follow for the heck.
Is that kind of hairbrain data what one would summarise growth ?
Seriously.
She’s like half-Japanese, I doubt that’s why. Also *Timbuktu (it’s a place in Mali).

But 10K for a goalie who’s never played a match higher than NPLW or US college level is pretty impressive. She’s also been heavily promoting the PFA’s report that calls for a professional A-League Women.

She was signed for $10,000?
Where was she playing before?

Are NPL clubs allowed to sell players to A League clubs?
I thought domestic transfers weren’t allowed.
They are allowed to do so but any domestic transfers have to be carried out during the transfer windows set by Football Australia.

Are we talking dollars or Facebook followers?
Instagram followers. Not a chance she costs $10,000, but she has over 10,000 Insta followers. My point was she’s done a good job of promoting her brand through her social medias (also Insta and TikTok) despite her initially relatively low profile. It helps a lot with brand deals. She went to a Nike workshop for example. In contrast most NPLW players are virtually just local people in the same way a local singer is.

That’s fine for individuals own ‘brands’ but we are talking about raising the awareness of the league itself and, along with that, the players themselves.

The FIFPRO Team of the Tournament is here! Well done to the four of our girls who made it!!!

Caitlin Foord, Sam Kerr, Alanna Kennedy and Ellie Carpenter making the inaugural FIFPRO Asia/Oceania Team of the Tournament, being adjudged as the best players at the Women's Asian Cup by their peers, with six Japan players on the list along with the four Matildas players and South Korea's Ko Yoo-jin.

Personally I don’t think Caitlin Foord was that good. I think Amy Sayer was better and proved that the new generation is replacing the old one, debunking the idea that the end of the First Golden Generation would cause us to collapse.

I think Caitlin Foord had a couple of howlers during the Matildas' Women's Asian Cup campaign but other players thought she did well which led to her making the list ahead of Amy Sayer.

"His coaching was a little too lax, a little too soft. A more rigorous approach and rigorous training is necessary."

Japan axe coach 12 days after winning Asian Cup.
Bring him to the Tillies, he’s clearly a fan lol!

Surprised that Japan have given Nils Nielsen his marching orders less than two weeks after going all the way in the Women's Asian Cup but if they want to be contenders for the 2027 Women's World Cup then it's understandable for them to be changing their coaching direction in a way which the federation feels is more in line with their expectations.

I wonder if they’ll keep picking foreign coaches. Nils Nielsen was their first foreign coach. Most Japanese people don’t speak English well (though the younger generations are better at it) so not speaking Japanese is probably why they’ve been so reluctant to hire foreign coaches.

But in saying that, does Japan have any good coaches? Great soccer nation but they haven’t produced any coaches with European success from what I know. Kinda similar to how England isn’t known for making good men’s coaches.

Japan likely to be going for a full coaching overhaul after Leah Blayney was also given her marching orders a couple of days after Nils Nielsen got the sack.
