Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Another international break, which includes UEFA underage tournaments.

Last night in the UEFA U17 qualifiers, Gianluca Okon-Engstler started and scored for Italy. William Millwood was a used sub for Serbia.

UEFA U19 qualifiers. Antonio Arena started and scored for Italy. Cillian Tollett was unused for Ireland.

I believe Ryan Williams has been named for his Indian debut, Giancarlo Gallifuoco is still waiting for his paperwork to switch to Malaysia, and Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli has been named for the England U17's.

More to come...

I've posted plenty of times in this thread with my opinions. Here's another opinion on said topic. I reckon we need to be doing more to not just reach out to the player but to also connect with the player's parents, just as Croatia did with Ivica Olic reaching out directly to Segecic's dad. I imagine that if a player is torn between two options, the perspective of their parents may be influential and it certainly couldn't hurt for us to be seeking to connect with them on a personal level. No different to Triantis who clearly has a very tight-knit family.
Im all for this... Somebody mentioned that these players somehow owed a debt of gratitude to Australian football for "developing" them. I would argue that its their parents that paid the exorbitant academy, SAP and private coaching fees all these years that need to be rewarded with a bit of respect by the federation.

Australia needs to lift its game when it’s come to persuading these dual national players, got to be proactive rather than reactive…

Agree. We often throw out the term "cap him". Plenty of football nations do just that. If a player is good enough to be called into a squad, giving him/her minutes is wise player management in the long term.

From the G and G Podcast thread ( highly recommended if you don't ever listen, with some wonderful guests), Grazor has said that Memeti and the Glory 20 yo striker have committed to Albania, from Twitter.
If they’re any good I doubt they’ll pick Albania and never play in a World Cup or get past the Euros group stage at most lol.

Ryan Williams isn’t a loss. He plays in the ISL which is worse than the A-League.

Yeah why would a young bloke from Dandenong want to play Euro qualifiers, and Nations league matches against some of Europe finest players when he can beat someone from Thailand in a 50/50 tackle?

That's why the 'not selling the shirt' narrative won't work given the highly competitive nature of international football, there needs to be a shift of thinking otherwise Aus football is going to be left behind with more disappointment.

Because he’d want to play at a World Cup and have a realistic chance of winning a continental trophy.

You might want to do that why assume someone else would? Thats what I dont get about this whole argument.... These guys want to be stars, Playing for Albania, this Memeti could be playing against Kane, Mbappe and Yamal next year..... Apart from a participation medal in a WC Australia doesn't offer that sort of appeal.

Your participation award analogy also works for Albania playing in anything.

The "not selling the shirt" narrative might sound strong but if that is really how Poppa is approaching things behind closed doors then thats idiotic. Fact of the matter is we are a small country football wise and most of our best talents are and gave always been dual nationals. If we cap a player and THEN its clear he isnt motivated/cbf'd the national team then sure, jettison him, but we wont know that til we cap them.

And if we have dual nationals already in the squad, FFS cap them ! (Cough, cough Segecic). Even if its last 2 mins of a game

In hindsight it seems quite funny that Chris Ikonimidis was capped for the Socceroos before even making his senior football debut given how his career had turned out (albeit I think he has been injured a lot).

He supposedly turned down the opportunity to play for Greece at the time (assuming for one of the youth teams). I’d like to think comparative to 2018 we have a lot more depth in the squad where we don’t need to rely on capping super young and inexperienced players, but it was a pretty crazy play by Ange to call him and lock him in.

Ange also capped Ajden Hrustic as well from the chances to play for Bosnia, if the likes of Ange and Arnie can cap young promising prospects then why cant Popa?

in the end it wasnt a loss doing that

at his peak he was socceroos quality at the time (wouldn't make the team today)

its low risk high reward capping highly promising players

The Gianluca Okon-Engstler dual international situation is a funny one, in that all the things that we complain about re Football Australia staying in touch with players, and building relationships with their parents, go out the window when the blokes brother is a Socceroo and his dad is a Socceroos coach.
I think we should give him a go. He’s playing over in Belgium.
