Vive La France: French Football discussion thread

Ful considering your luv of France and its football instead of commenting on your blogs I'd sooner discuss here.

What I like about the 2 players here is both were major Juve players.

The Zidane blog - got to say what a friggin player, admire his stealth lethal play alot - one of their best and I enjoy attacking mids like him.
Wonder how he would fit in todays low bloc game ? imo as long as he's given free reign he'd rip defense's apart still.
Interesting he has a huge black mark against him (to some) like another similar and another frenchman.
I mean Zidane wasn't the type to really over react on the pitch but that ET WC Final to headbutt Materazzi was a brutal way for him to end.
Sure I'm glad the Azzurri won but I get why he reacted.

So my other french Legend who suffered a big black unfortunate mark is Platini.
More my younger day era and playing for Juve a big tick those days in SerieA.
Another amazing gifted attacking French player - known as the King back there and inspiration what became later The Platini gens under him becoming the force ala Henry/Anelka/Trézéguetall etc....
It really saddenned me his FIFA/Blatter downfall even though acquitted later.
What a NT career - 72 games for 41 goals ! a AM !
Juve 147 games 68 goals.
IMO again I think he'd cut the mustard today as well - you just block that much ability a full 90mins.

Well Zidane said he was getting sick of Materazzi pulling on his shit and reportedly told him, "If you want my shirt, I will give it to you afterwards," to which Materazzi replied, "I would rather have your sister".....

Would I have headbutted Materazzi for that?

Probably no but in the heat of the moments in a game of football when the adrenalin is running high??

French artist Adel Abdessemed immortalised the moment in a five-metre-tall bronze statue. Displayed at the Centre Pompidou in Paris...

Although it was bought by a Middle Eastern buyer...

Zidane has maintained he does not regret the act itself, famously stating he would "rather die than apologise" for defending his family's honour against the insult...

My blog was more framed as Zizou's relationship with the city of Marseille where he was born and raised rather than a look at his overall career.

I will take time to go through that at some point and Michel Platini who was my favourite all time French player. Wonderful footballer...

Yes I got that re Zidanes background I’ve just gone ahead :)
I know all too well re the send off reaction and I get that - but for me also he got owned by the banter and lost the fight I turn the pen shootout.
I would have far rather beaten Matarazzi with the ball and put the winner away in normal time then given my shirt but say nothing :)

You have to consider the issues surrounding Zinedine Zidane’s upbringing.

He grew up in La Castellane in the northern suburbs of Marseille.

La Castellane is one of the most notorious council or social housing estates in Europe.

I'm not condoning the headbutt but sometimes something will snap in a person...

To.suggest that Ligue Un is not on beIN Aus is because Europeans care about Australia or NZ then you're just being silly or your 'source' is just being silly...

Begs the question, then, of why beIN Australia suddenly stopped showing a league they were happy to broadcast for years...

Begs the question then, why would the LPF stop the media rights company, in this case Infront, who on sell their broadcast rights, sell to a country that they were happy to sell to for years?

Look Mike I actually think quite highly of you as an Australian football writer and I'm a fan of your pieces in World Soccer....

But we might have to agree to disagree on this one...😋

My latest blog on Le Foot

Multi-club ownership has been under the spotlight in France, particularly at Strasbourg who are part of Blue Co the ownership group of Chelsea....

This is my piece for Le Foot on the enigmatically brilliant Frenchman Eric Cantona and one of the most controversial incidents in the history of the English Premier League.

My article on French football's African connection. I don't usually use lots of statistics but thought for this piece they'd paint the picture much better.

Le Match du Siècle - The Match of the Century

You're gonna make me watch the match again now arent you?

I've re-watched it twice this week.....

It's on YouTube
I know..... I always thought nostalgia tinted a lot of these old matches with fairy dust and the quality of play was more remembered than real, but this match really does hold up .. a MUST watch for any fan of beautiful, flowing, carefree football...

I challenge any of the new breed of "systems" football people to watch this and not be mesmerised.

I did give you a little mention....

And somewhere, in a bar in Rio, in a café in Paris, in a living room in Beijing, a soccer social club in Melbourne, a man is telling his son, probably his grandson about the day the gods played football
