It does seem like this system
A) reduces authenticity by making it more like a club transfermarkt (to be fair we have nabbed souttar this way too)
B) makes the powerful countries more powerful and the weaker ones stay in their place. Of course there are exceptions like morocco

Was a very interesting episode for sure. Two interesting perspectives and an absolute clown perspective by SM Pete. Seems odd that you would completely stop supporting the Socceroo's who he was passionate before pre-incident just from a single bad experience from a few other clowns. Also, let's be honest it's not like ethnic clubs are completely without fault. For example, when I was 13, I trialed at SMFC and after two months of being strung along I was told "it was a pity I wasn't Greek or I would be playing for them that season" before being told I was not making the team. Some club culture you have down there Pete racially discriminating against a 13-year-old, can't see why the FFA wouldn't want to get some of that in the A-league.

Look I'll even give a balanced opinion as I'm not as bitter as him and I think SMFC should be in the A-league (they couldn't be any bigger failures then Western or Macarthur). As Vince Rugari said in a recent podcast, now with Victory and City there's different options and you don't have to support the ethnic clubs if you don't want to. But honestly having bitter clowns like on the pod make me turn it off instantly.

As for Segečić, it's a definite case of not being rated by Popa and throwing his toys out of the pram. Seems like an odd/poor decision as 99% chance his not playing for Croatia. He should have just said nothing and when Popa is no longer manager he would have been able to come back into the fold. Honestly, he probably still will as soon as Popa is gone provided he is deserving of making the squad.

Obviously I wasn't there for your experience or Petes, and I'm sorry to hear about both. I do think you mischaracterize Pete's experience as a one off based on his anecdote. Even on top of the A league model excluding clubs like south and some of the racially dodgy rhetoric from some suits (mixing dirty and clean water) there were other heavy handed policies like the NCIP a few years ago. If Pete was the only person who felt that way, that would be one thing. But a lot of research shows that heavy handed assimilation tactics backfire (I shared one paper on the pod but there is a body of research on this. It also can't be explained just by bitterness and it is an effect consistent across countries). There are a lot of people in migrant communities who had the socceroos as their #1 team 20 years ago who don't today and that lukewarmness towards the national team is going to affect what decisions young kids make when their loyalties tested. Most players I see that can take the roos to a higher level are dual nationals, so in the end it is a topic we have to address
As for Sega coming back, unfortunately a u21 cap would be enough to lock him in

That’s rough, especially at that age. It does make me think it could’ve been someone handling it poorly and not wanting to tell a 13 year old they weren’t good enough, so they gave a different kind of explanation that ended up sounding worse.

Oh gosh reminds me of when i turned down a girl and i didnt want to say that i wasnt attracted to her so i panicked and made something up which was far worse lol
 
I guess it's just a hot news period but SEN etc is 11 months of 'yeah there's this sport with a round ball' to 'there's so much stuff going on let's get quality analysis going.'

Sadly new rules, after a one time switch any game at any level official or other wise locks them into their new country. Ill double check with James when I have him on the pod next week (he helped write the rules i believe)
 
I'm not a fan of the new rules. I think players should be allowed to switch during their youth team years. The world is becoming more multicultural.

I really enjoyed the pod, especially Alex and Pete. As a son of immigrants, I can relate. My own experience in Australia is that I always felt I had to pick between being Australian or Portuguese. As I've gotten older, I don't feel like I need to pigeonhole myself as one or the other. I am both.

As a kid, I would have selected to play for Australia. However, as I have gotten older and seen first hand how poorly Australian football has been run at times, I'd select to play for Portugal. It doesn't make me any less Australian. Maybe if I had grown up in Portugal and seen how football is run there, I might want to play for Australia.

As I said before, if we have a good environment, Australian footballers will want to play for Australia instead of the country of their parents/grandparents.

Oh wow, Paul C is back with a vengeance. What an absolute bold faced lie, there will hundreds of non Greek players gearing up for training tonight down at South, why even make up such garbage? What ELSE are you going to tell us, that they handed you a Greek diary and calendar and you "couldn't fit in as a spectator" because the ground announcer (sorry @nealsym ) spoke exclusively in Greek?

Or it could have been one of those "Im not racist bro I ate Chinese food once" lines we havent heard here for a while. I asked to trial for South many many years ago and was told I wasn't even near good enough and Im as Greek as they come :P
