Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Might be wrong, but isnt the rule that since theyve used the 'one time switch' mechanic playing in any match at any level will be enough. A senior friendly, or underage friendly is enough to cap tie?
My understanding — although I haven’t been able to find a direct link on the FIFA site — is that there is a “switch‑back if never capped” provision. Senior friendlies and U21 matches aren’t considered competitive fixtures, so in theory there remains a small window for a player to return to their original national team if they haven’t played a competitive senior match. This is why I expect both players to be capped in the Nations League, as those matches do count as competitive fixtures and would permanently tie them to Croatia/Greece. Tie them down early and keep your options open down the line if they grow into the players you expect.

Caceres on for Velupillay on 82 and Arzani on for Boyle on 92. We were 2:0 in and could just out him on for a bit more cover.

Popovic apologists forget this is the guy who was in red hot form at Hibs. He was more than capable.
I have been team Popa and not selling the shirt for the most part, but geez that is a tough pill to swallow! Not sure how true it is but I remember hearing that both players were told that they were going to make their debuts, so their parents flew down to be at the games only for them to sit on the pine for the whole match.

That is absolutely correct, any minutes in any game at any level, after using the one-time switch, irreversibly tie them to the country. And Triantis has already played for Greece since the switch, so he can’t ever come back (unless FIFA change the rules again!).

Maybe FIFA will change the rules when CR7 retires so he can play for Saudi Arabia till he’s 50 lol. Or Leo Messi with the USA.

Do you have a link where this is stated? I haven’t been able to find anything so far.

There was a lot of discussion on this in this thread a few pages ago, which included links to FIFA documents. Also a post on page 58 by the poster jrvkfootball who worked with FIFA and was involved when these rules were set up
Go back to pages from the mid-50’s onwards or so to see all of this.

Thanks for that. It honestly baffles me that a player who is currently sitting on the bench for a club fighting relegation in the English second tier — yet still had a very realistic chance of representing Australia at the World Cup — is now choosing to play for Croatia’s U21s, with any opportunity to play for Croatia at a major tournament likely years and years away. If he still had Australia as a fallback option in case things didn’t work out, I could understand the move a bit more. But as it stands, it just feels like such a strange decision.

Arguments could be made by the Croatian side that they're not developing as many players at the rate and quality they'd like so it's best they look everywhere they can. Just like Australia should.

With a population of only 4mill, Croatia for decades have always looked outside of Croatia for talent.

A lot of Croatians live in Germany, Austria, Switzerland etc, it's nothing new for us.

just to name a few.

Rakitic - Swiss
Kovac Bros - Germany
Kovacic - Austria

If Athletic Bilbao can field an entirely Basque team I’m sure Croatia can field an entirely Croatian team.

THIS.

My read on both Sega and Triantis is that Popa and co have failed to attentively show care to the most important aspect of most tight knit European football loving cultures....their families.

Imagine the embarrassment and offense taken by Triantis's family with proud Greek and Australian roots when he was paraded in his Socceroos top for media in the lead up...they all get their tickets and fly in for him then to not even get a minute! I've no doubt they all would have said to him that there is no way any Greek would treat you like this! Not to mention the team being run by Croatians and Italians wouldn't have helped.

Let's not forget at this exact time Triantis was on the way to making many peoples lists for SPFL Player of the Season! No need to sell the shirt here!

Sega may have followed a similar story we don't know. But what we do know is all of this MUST be down to what Popa didn't do rather than what he did. He made them feel like a number rather than a valued member of the Australian football family.

I notice the Wallabies Australia's rugby team suffers a similar problem when it comes to duel national players and players that play overseas, this rigid hard line approach might work in local sports but can have negative effects in more global sports where players have options to choose other nations.

I just worry this sort of approach could lead to losing to more players in the future as well, the fact that Popa spoke to coaches like Eddie Jones who is from rugby is a bit baffling too.
