Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Interesting article showing how other countries manage potential dual nationals with Austria manager Ralf Rangnick's "two year pursuit" to attract this player, who is also eligible for England. No mention of "not selling the jersey". Spoiler alert: Rangnick got his man.

Look at the record.

Arnold got Souttar, Circati, Burgess, Jones, Mabil, Deng, Hrustic, Strain, Cummings, Dougall, Jordy Bos, Degenek, Alou Kuol, Garang Kuol, Fran Karacic, Gianni Stenness and Nestory Irankunda but missed on Dykes when Covid delayed qualifiers

Popovic got Vellupillay, Balard and Mathews but missed Segecic, Triantis, Bennie and Pavlesic. He is trying to tie Volpato, Overy, Robertson (recommitting after a long term thigh injury under Arnold and a standoff with Popovic) , Mo Toure, Al Hassan Toure and Paul Okon Jr

So remind me how well Popovic's recruitment is going.

triantis was a huge loss and in a problem position too. Just got called up to the Greek NT

Daniel Bennie has expressed interest in representing Scotland but has not officially committed or changed his association yet so if he doesn't get a callup for the World Cup there's still a chance of him being in the green and gold jersey in the future.

What’s most frustrating is Popovic’s insistence that new squad members shouldn’t play as soon as they’re brought in. Why? If they’re good enough, they should be on the pitch. I understand that Segecic was initially included for a friendly — which wouldn’t have officially tied him to Australia — but once he earned that first cap, the pull of Croatia would have been much weaker. If Kewell and Viduka were coming through today with Popovic in charge, I’m convinced both would have ended up playing for England and Croatia instead.

That said, I genuinely think Segecic and Triantis will end up regretting their decisions. Both would have been regular starters for Australia for the next decade, with multiple World Cup cycles where they could have been central figures in the squad and showcased themselves for bigger club opportunities. Unless they make major leaps in their development, I struggle to see either reaching double-digit caps or making World Cup or Euro squads for Croatia and Greece.

How true unless it's Okon, Beach, Teague and Matthews. I want the boys to do well but it's crazily hypocritical.

Balard was made to wait so long. Triantis got stuffed around. I think some questions were asked by the press and he easily said they wanted to play others. He then goes and promotes even newer players who warrant a chance less than those in great form.

More if you count those playing outside Croatia, including in the A-League, NPL and below. Technically, even though he’s not good enough, I would assume players like Keegan Jelačić are eligible. The rules are you can go up to parents and even as far as grandparents. Therefore few Gen Alpha (“kids these days”, born 2011-2020) and many Gen Z (1996-2010) would be eligible for countries like Croatia, Greece, Italy, Lebanon (if Christian), Malta, Serbia, etc. However, many will be eligible for China, India, etc.
India is an outlier on this issue.

The AIFF have been unable to utilise its diaspora community in the UK due to the Indian government's laws that forces NRI's to live in India for 5 years before they can obtain an Indian passport to be eligible to represent India in sports.

That prevented Danny Batth from achieving his ambition of playing for India.

We as followers don't know what goes on in camp but to say Popovic insists that new squad members shouldn't play as soon as their brought in doesn't hold water. He has played a few, and not played a few. You can argue about which ones he should have given game time to, but it's not a solid rule. I think he picks players who he thinks will fit into his system regardless of how new they are.

Not giving Triantis a run in that China qualify was about as dumb as fuck as it gets.
Caceres on for Velupillay on 82 and Arzani on for Boyle on 92. We were 2:0 in and could just out him on for a bit more cover.

Popovic apologists forget this is the guy who was in red hot form at Hibs. He was more than capable.

Yep, our AA thread was in awe of MOM after MOM at club level. Very strange.

A serious question, do FA have any chance to persuade Sega to change back? Or is that just too much effort, case closed move on?

I’m willing to bet that both Triantis and Segecic will be capped in a competitive match shortly after the World Cup — most likely in the UEFA Nations League — to formally tie them to Greece and Croatia and prevent any possibility of them switching back to Australia, which remains an option until they play an official competitive fixture.

Might be wrong, but isnt the rule that since theyve used the 'one time switch' mechanic playing in any match at any level will be enough. A senior friendly, or underage friendly is enough to cap tie?

Popovic's massive press conference said that the FA are in contact with players. Just not these tow guys by the looks of it. That press conference was insightful but full of hypocracies.

Nektar will make the Greek squad. Sega won’t make the Croatian squad though.

Which is kinda shit from the Indian government cause they aren’t good at any sports other than cricket and field hockey. Even just Danny Batth woulda been a huge addition to India’s squad and he’d be their best ever player (Sunil Chhetri never played outside India despite occasionally being glazed as one of the “greatest strikers in the world”).
