I have a question from my Rewriting Socceroos History playthrough:

Josip Skoko. Is it pronounced "Sco-row" or is FIFA/EA just having a laugh?

That's what I would have though, but the comms guy on all the EA games has been saying "Sco-row" since like FIFA 98 and it's messing with me hahaha
we apparently got jelacic's pronunciation wrong

In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA, not the same as the beer), his name would be written as [jǒsip skôko] (note that j = y in IPA).

Keegan Jelačić would correctly be pronounced [jělatʃitɕ] (Yelachich). In Croatian, the letters č and ć both make the sound "ch" and š makes the sound "sh".

I was actually thinking of doing a Fan View article about player names and how to say/write them correctly. Let me know if that would be of interest!

Get captain but his form and behaviour near the end wasn't good. His comment on the older players not pulling their weight was wrong. This was when we needed Holger to regenerate and he didn't.

He was bang on about coaches and look how things are now abroad compared to then at multiple levels and locations of the game.

Such a shame he didnt stay around australian football after. Was a great figure in the golden gen. If his son comes good i hope we see more of him

Neill copped a lot of bad press at the end of his career. I can't recall if it was warranted but my vibe is it was tall poppy syndrome. There was all the Luca$h Neill stuff. We're bad at that. The guy was a winner.

Neill's form and aging was costing him on the pitch. Ange came in and saw his behaviour as detrimental when he snapped at the booing fan. I do wonder how Neill and Wilkshire would have held the line in Brazil but Ange's system would've have agreed with it.

I think the press also found their target and it was another unnecessary witch hunt and then they did the same thing to Ange. We need the hard questions now for Popovic but the gang up tactics in press conferences by that group of journalists, whoever they were, were only looking for fiery headlines rather than rational football analysis.

This is not how I recall it being at the time. Ange wanted Neill to go but was not going to take him if he was not playing. Neill could not get a contract anywhere where he would start and play. Ange didn't take him. Neill could not fathom the idea that a player like Wilkinson would get picked ahead of him (given their careers). But it wasn't his behaviour, it was match time / form.
Our opposition let Wilkinson have the ball in build up and forced him to make a pass because he was the weak link on the ball. Spiranovic was seen as far better on the ball and was immediately pressed. Neill would have been a better outlet in possession, but he just wasn't playing. Wilkinson would have been far better had he been integrated earlier by Osieck.

I believe both Wilkshire and Schwarzer retired from internationals rather than continue on with Ange. Again Ange would have taken both, but if they didn't want it, he wasn't selling the shirt to them haha.

It wasn't tall poppy syndrome. He was the very old captain of a very old team who struggled to qualify and were playing badly. He couldn't get a game anywhere. If you think Popa is holding onto Boyle or Duke, this is nothing on what we went through over two cycles with Verbeek, Osieck and the GG. There was almost zero regeneration of the side. Whatever went on in the media was nothing compared to the animosity of the fans towards Neill at the time. It is really unfortunate it ended the way it did for him because he gave a huge amount to the cause and should be an icon of the Socceroos.

Putting aside LN's age and lack of playing time late in his career Ange's game didn't fit him period.
All just bad timing in the end for Lucas - for I agree as mentioned above he was imo a good brave Captain and done dam well us being under dogs near on every game - he punched above his weight and did deserve being an icon with many of them.
My main regret for him was being Grossod - I kept screaming don't go to ground don't go to ground I knew what was coming :(

Pen or not the discussion showed our immaturity. The question should have been why did he go to ground in that position, not whether the super slow mo showed it wasn't a pen. In real time those get given.
