Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Seems like croatia hoarding talent
Anthony Pavlesić seems to have switched because Croatia offered him a youth cap. Extremely fucking stupid especially since we need depth in goalies for the future.

Adrian Segečić I assume wanted to be a Socceroo but was fed up with being ignored so Croatia offered him something. If he never gets capped in his life then that will suck and hopefully FIFA’s rule change by then so he can switch back to us.

Adrian Segecic can still reverse his change of association and return to Football Australia from the Croatian football federation but if he gets even a minute of game time in their March friendlies in Orlando then he will have reached the point of no return unfortunately.

This is seriously disappointing, especially when he said he wanted to play for Australia for now this to happen means something has gone wrong behind scenes.

Supporting Australian football can be really hard…

Phew. Let’s hope Popa gets sacked and he never plays for Croatia then switches tomorrow.

And the kid wanted to play for us ffs, I don’t trust Popa whatsoever by the way or the management team at FA for that matter either.
America and Australia seem to be shit at convincing our players to play for us. Look at the lack of Hispanics in the US teams despite American soccer being shaped by Hispanics. Mexico caps them all (looking at Wikipedia it appears that Mexico caps everyone they can lol; not just Americans, also Spaniards and other Latinos).

We seem to be similar. Plenty Aussies have played for Croatia, Greece and Italy. We’re just lucky we aren’t at the point America is where they seem to default any talented Mexican American to being Mexican whereas we still have our diversity.

I should also note there is a difference between a player who was never good enough to be capped playing for another country and a player who is or was good enough playing for another country. Cuba taking Americans (a strategy they haven’t really looked at since Cuba and the US have shit relations even though most of Miami is Cuban) or Malta taking Aussies is different to Croatia, Greece and Italy taking Aussies and Mexico taking Americans.

Croatia is an interesting one to look at actually.

Over the past 12 months, they’ve gained:
  • Anthony Pavlesić from Australia in May 2025
  • Leon Grgić from Austria in August 2025
  • Dominik Šimić from Switzerland in March 2026
  • Adrian Segečić from Australia in March 2026
But only lost:
  • Veldin Hodza to Kosovo in September 2025
  • Leo Rimac to Slovenia in September 2025
They’ve gained four players and lost two so far in the past year. Why the fuck are the 2018 World Cup runners-up and 2022 World Cup third-placed team relying on diaspora?

Really? I think the fact he chose Croatia might be the best indicator that he wants to play for Croatia.
I understand people are disappointed and angry when a potential Socceroo chooses another country.
But these fantasies, that player A really wanted to play for the Socceroos but has actually chosen another country because the Socceroo Coach wasn't "nice" to them, are just that, fantasies.

Torn on this one. Happy to blame Popa, can’t stand his football and selections most of the time. But he got us qualified. Just seems premature from the young guy, like others have said unless he’s been promised something from the Croats? But is their pool so shallow they’re chasing a bench player in the championship that fades out of games for long periods? All seems odd

You can tell yourself all the convenient lies you like.
How is it?

Yes he played for Sydney nearly two decades ago but the facts are he has coached our two biggest rivals since.

He seems loathe to pick current or former Sydney players as a result and now we've lost one of the hottest prospects of this generation as a result.

The whole Triantis family wanted to play for Australia. Nectar was the only one that had the talent. But something is seriously wrong with Popovic's man management.

He inherited a very solid defence from Arnie, he's screwed around in midfield and he has Veart to thank for his most threatening forwards.
