Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

The weather will be in the high 20s, but the problem as you correctly point out will be the high humidity levels. That is definitely energy sapping. We need at least 2-3 substitutes to come on just to give players a breather.
Theyll have drink breaks I guess...

We can add u23 players to the squad if/ when needed. Skapoulas was added originally because javi couldn't go

South Melbourne ran out 1-0 winners over Bentleigh Greens in our home game at Home of the Matildas, with Jordan Swibel's goal in the third minute the only goal of the match. South Melbourne women also got the job done 5-1 over 10-player Melbourne Victory at the same venue, with Heidi Dalton and Meisha Westland both scoring braces, along with a 40th minute goal to Alexis Pantazopoulos.

Crucial 3 points with whats ahead.

We almost paid the ultimate price at the end for being wasteful. I would have like to have seen more urgency from us in the 1st half with the wind advantage. The keeper makes an absolute howler and then we dont put enough direct pressure on him. Bentleigh are absolute hacks but our "too cute" play at times invited those bad challenges in. The amount of times we could have released Cocks into space in the 1st half and overplayed the passes was pissing me off, even more so in the 2nd half when we started playing those more direct balls but the wind held us up.

Goal aside Swibel isnt giving me much, he looks like a typical nswpl player use to playing carpet football on articial turf, doesnt like the physical stuff obviously but you just cant release him in behind as he is too slow. I reckon if Bonada was up front he would have had a few one on ones behind the Greens defence.

Menelaou BOG for me.

Tonight’s win was ugly and could have been much easier with some more accurate and effective passages of play. We should have wrapped up the match by halftime. Good to get the early goal and make Bentleigh open up, but we didn’t make the most of our dominance.

What let us down often was the final pass. I could see Cocks and Lackay later in the second half waiting for that through ball and it either coming too late or the midfielder holding on the ball too long or passing to the wrong option.

Bentleigh were just average and typical of a newly promoted team. Their physical style of play is awful to watch.

In the last 8 days, we’ve achieved the following results:
  • 4-1 win over South Island United
  • 2-1 win over Altona Magic
  • 5-0 win over Solomon Kings
  • 1-0 win over Bentleigh Greens
That’s not too bad.

Now we have a tough 2 weeks ahead with NPL and OFC matches.

Anyone else still trying to work out how no one has taught Messi-Rooney that when you pass the ball you move to the space?? 3 times in his limited time at the end he couldvrle received the ball in the space and gone wide to waste time and 3 times he stood there like a cone! Perhaps i should he happy that he atleast got the pass right 2 times out of 3..

Mesourouni is a waste of space but more alarmingly Swibel often does the same thing.

Honestly if you were at Altona last week and saw Bonada live up front, thats the closest i've seen to someone that looks like a real striker. His running patterns were on another level from the other guys up front. He is being wasted hugging the sidelines and looks uncomfortable.

In our best team i've got Max on the left, Cocks on the right and Bonada up front, that would be a dynamic setup that few teams could stop.

Yuki in the midfield?

Who would have thought after the volume of football across the Pacific we would be equal first on the NPL Victoria standings.

With 4 wins across 8 days across 2 competitions, and sitting second on OFC Pro League, the Football Department has done a great job so far.

Next 2 weeks will be massive.

Menelaou had a fantastic game... hasnt been given much game time so made a good claim fro a starting possie... Agree with Swibel, Bonada gave them much more grief on the wing... ig=f he was up top would have made some room and scored 1-2.
