Women's Asian Cup match discussion thread

China defeated North Korea 2-1 in their last Women's Asian Cup group B match at CommBank Stadium to finish with a perfect record of three wins from three and top the group. Matildas confirmed to be facing North Korea in the quarterfinals Friday at HBF Park.

Same thing really.
Matildas fans and Mormons both convert a lot of people. Interestingly they’ve both had somewhat similar success. 17.5 million Mormons worldwide, and if the Tillies make the final we should be aiming for 14-18 million viewers on World Cup figures (I think the England semi was 70% of the country at some point?).

There you go, all this time I was thinking runner up of group A would play winner of group B.

So it’s runner up vs runner up?
It's only runner up of group A facing the runner up of group B so the Matildas are facing North Korea whilst South Korea get one of the two best third-placed sides as winners of our group.

Yeah. And if we won the group we woulda played the third place team from Group B or C depending on who was higher ranked. South Korea will play either Uzbekistan or Vietnam. Vietnam are the highest-ranked third place team but play Japan today and should lose by more than two goals (they need a goal difference of less than –2 to advance over the Philippines as Uzbekistan are already through).

Therefore, it’s most likely that the quarters will be South Korea vs Uzbekistan and Japan vs Philippines in Sydney, and China vs Taiwan and Australia vs North Korea in Perth. Technically, only the latter tie is confirmed, however. So yeah, we’ll be seeing China and Taiwan play each other even though they hate each other and don’t even recognise each other’s legitimacy (under the flawed One China policy implemented by the CCP since the 1970s, both the PRC and ROC claim to be the sole legitimate government of “China”; in the eyes of most Australians and unofficially our government both are legitimate governments, one communist and one democratic).

I'm basing on what I watch plain and simple for NT games.
Overhated ? yer well thats for whoever I just express what I see as a player, many mistakes (yep every player errors, some more than others) at this level imo - for me over rated and obviously as mentioned no one is pressuring her spot.
Your invested and into her you need to accept other pov's.
When and IF she plays a cracker I shall so.
Ellie has a massive engine, she works up & down the right side & without the ball is amazing, once she gets the ball, she just doesn't think.
She also can't cross, with one of the best headers in the middle in Kerr, & Ellie engine & pace, we should see many more goals, but she just doesn't get the ball into the middle.

Agree no doubt about her engine but her final product is lacking which is such a waste. She does cover well in defence .

and pretty much what I have said and how I rate her - best fullback as HSF reckons ? yer nah again as mentioned - for all her wonderous work rate the conviction lacks as expressed, ends up 0 more than strike - a good crosser she'd have a assist hit in spades.
All those close 1nil win/or drawn games that have you peckering your butts watching - decent cross's Kerr could put us in safer position how many times.

Assuming we have those exact quarterfinal matchups then the play-in matches will probably be Uzbekistan playing the Philippines and the Matildas playing Chinese Taipei, with South Korea facing Japan and China getting a rematch against North Korea in the semis.

Except I’m basing this off hundreds of games, not five games. You should watch her play for Chelsea when the Asian Cup ends. You’ll be surprised. Currently there’s only one defender who has a brighter future is Willa Pearson.

Sam Kerr has mostly been a sub for Chelsea since coming back from her ACL injury. She’s scored a lot of goals but also had some average games too. I think she’ll leave this season given her contract is expiring. No idea where she’ll go, America would be the most obvious answer (especially since her wife is American) but the NWSL isn’t as attractive for Aussies anymore (possibly because it’s less physical).

Anyway, Ellie can’t be that shit if she’s won two Champions Leagues as a key player. Just saying. Her crossing probably needs some work though but she’s still only 25 and has time to improve. It just feels like she’s old cause she’s been a Matilda since she was 15 (at the time this was more common, it’s not that common anymore).

Missed the first 20 mins or so, but Aus v South K was a good game.

Joe M wasn't happy, but I thought the Matildas kept the ball well at times - better than under Tony G.

I'm very amused that Alana K has been supplanted as a central defender in the Matildas, and moved to midfield, scoring 4 goals in 2 games!

AK has upstaged most playing regularly for bigger clubs, playing in a new position in midfield!

I do not care to watch her or any W club games tbh with all due respect.
Kerr's record doesn't come into the equation - she's proven and tillies will be at a huge loss when she hangs up the boots even with half a leg missing.
Your Ellie's winning club and CL medals form isn't transferring with assists that should be happenning the amount of times she gets herself in position in NT games - thems the facts NT games.
By the way she is not alone being a top club player men incl not delivering the same goods at NT levels.
Its a shame for the tilly's she lacks not - probably needs some work - the proof is in the pudding.
By 25yrs (prime) you sure would think she had worked on this long before.
Need to take the rose coloured glass's off.

I'd say wait and see how Willa Pearson runs with the Junior Matildas at the under-17 Women's Asian Cup in China in May first but definitely she has heaps of potential and a bright future ahead of her.

Which part is surprising? The goals? Yeah absolutely. Her being moved out of defence? Not at all. We’re stacked with defensive depth including players that didn’t get picked, whereas midfield is an area we have much less depth in.

However, despite our lack of depth in midfield, we’ve got some bright talent there. Kyra Cooney-Cross is amazing as we all know, as is Clare Wheeler who I think should be talked about way more. For forwards we have some depth in wingers. We technically depth in strikers too, it’s just that our standards are so high because of Sam Kerr’s legacy (which continues to this day). We have no depth in goalies.

Japan leading Vietnam 1-0 and Chinese Taipei leading India 2-1 at the half in the last two Women's Asian Cup group stage matches at HBF Park and CommBank Stadium respectively. As it stands Vietnam and Uzbekistan will make the eight as the two best third-placed sides, with Uzbekistan ahead of the Philippines on goals scored as both are level on three points and -2 for and against.
