2026 Dockerty Cup Round 3 & 4 Draw Information
Football Victoria (FV) wish to provide key information and updates relating to the 2026footballvictoria.com.au

It is technically the four semi-finalists that progress in scenario 2, by virtue of allowing scenario one - and hence having ten clubs playing in Round 7, twenty in Round 6 and so on; there needs to be scenario 2 to decide which four of the five make the semis.
Yes, that is essentially my point. It is technically the four semi-finalists that progress in scenario 2, by virtue of allowing scenario one - and hence having ten clubs playing in Round 7, twenty in Round 6 and so on; there needs to be scenario 2 to decide which four of the five make the semis.
However the competition is staged, there needs to be playoffs, whether those playoffs are for the Dockerty Cup semis or exclusively for the Australia Cup is perhaps a different question. Scenario 2 is flawed as clubs are pretty much getting drawn out of a pot whether they make the Australia Cup automatically or have to play an extra game rather than qualifying on complete merit.
I agree the format is awful, and would of preferred they cut it down on a 16 - 8 - 4, etc. number of teams. My personal preference would've been a playoff after Round 7 between the four clubs knocked out by South (if they make the semis): R7 loser vs R4 loser, R6 loser vs R5 loser, and so on - just because I'd feel pissed if a club already qualified knocked us out of a cup competition. Obviously the simple alternative is just the semi final losers playoff.

You are both correct. This is typical of Football Victoria trying to over engineer something that should have been far more simpler to set up.Yes, that is essentially my point.
Should have just been the four semi-finalists go through if South don't win the quarter final. Or, in the event they do - probably a play-off tournament between the four semi-final losers (like it used to be?) would have been best. After all, I get what you mean about being knocked out by a club that's already qualified, but in reality, Australia Cup is piggybacking off the Dockerty Cup - so it should be adapting/using the Dockerty Cup structure (4, 8, 16, 32, 64), rather than making things fucking weird with stages of 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, etc.
Clear as MUD.So this is the bit I don't understand:
FA have confirmed and announced that FV will be allocated four (4) slots for the National Stages of the 2026 Hahn Australia Cup. This allocation does not include the automatic slow awarded to the Australian Championship Champion, South Melbourne FC.
Which means South Melbourne are guaranteed a Round of 32 (Round 8, essentially) fixture in the Australia Cup.
So.. Scenario 1 makes sense. But I don't understand why Scenario 2 is the way it is. Wouldn't it have been easier/fairer on the other clubs that if South Melbourne don't make the Dockerty Cup semi-finals, that it's just the four semi-finallists and South Melbourne go through to National Stage of Australia Cup? I feel like this is just introducing a guaranteed play-off for play-off's sake.
