Women's Asian Cup match discussion thread

Mary Fowler on the bench for the Matildas but Kyra Cooney-Cross not in the matchday squad altogether for the Tillies on opening day so we should still see Fowler get some game time today.

Re KCC not in the squad.
From Wikipedia...

In early January 2026, she returned to Australia after learning of her mother's diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma (stage 4) – a rare, aggressive and incurable cancer of the bile duct.[51][52] Cooney-Cross was unavailable for Arsenal's return to WSL duties after their mid-season break,[52] but returned as an unused substitute in late January for their victory against AS FAR in their 2026 FIFA Women's Champions Cup semifinal.[53][54]

Wishing her & her mum all the best.

But we didn’t need to defend we needed to be lest wasteful in front of goal.
Our poor shot conversion rate will be a problem as the tournament progresses if it leads to us dropping points or losing crucial games and should be cause for concern going forwards.

Kyra Cooney-Cross still working her way back to match fitness and should be right for the match against Iran or our last group game against South Korea.

Ok so I’m kind of both right and wrong.

As per the FIFA Statutes:
“A player may, only once, request to change the association for which he is eligible to play to the association of another country of which he holds nationality.”

AND

“A request to change association may be withdrawn. Any such withdrawal is irrevocable.”

So once someone changes AND plays ANY game for the new country, they are tied.
Youth teams don't count until 21.

Friendlies don't count too, hence why Beard was able to swap.

The request to change can only be if a player has no more than 3 games for a nation and none of those games is in a major tournament. They also have to meet either residency or ancestry criteria

Yes, they don't count for locking in, but it does count for setting your initial 'nation'. This can only be changed by a player once.

a request for eligibility or change of association must be submitted to the Players’ Status Committee (PSC):
• For players that have acquired a new nationality and moved to the relevant territory between the age of 10 and 18 (art. 7 par. 2 of the RGAS);
• For stateless individuals (art. 8 par. 2 of the RGAS);
• For players that wish to change association after having already participated in an official competition at any level in any kind of football for another association (art. 9 par. 2 of the RGAS); and
• For players that were previously granted a change of association and that wish to change back to their former association (art. 9 par. 6 of the RGAS)
I've bolded/underlined the bits that are relevant from that.

I think we can all agree that players can change as underage matches don't count to fully locking a player in (art 9 par 2), so I'm not going to go much in depth on that other than the main principle of Article 9:

A player may, only once, request to change the association for which he is eligible to play to the association of another country of which he holds the nationality

Now in terms of changing back, Art 9 Par 6 is described by FIFA only as:
For a player who wishes to reverse a change-of-association decision pursuant to article 9 paragraph 5, the relevant MA must submit a request for change of association to the PSC on behalf of the player pursuant to the Procedural Rules, prior to the player being permitted to participate for its representative teams.
Article 9 Par 5 that it refers to:
A player will be permitted to reverse a change of association decision where they:
107.1 were previously granted a change of association by the PSC; and
107.2 were never fielded in a match (in an official or non-official competition) by the new MA in any kind of football; and
107.3 continues to hold the nationality of their former MA

The kicker there is, that it doesn't say anything about "A" internationals (which is overage international matches, so Socceroos and Matildas), so it includes ANY LEVEL in ANY KIND of football.

Thus, in the instance of Volpato - should he choose to change from Italy to Australia, yes he will be cap-tied after playing a friendly.
Beard was able to change as she had only played for Australia and met the criteria to change under Article 9 Par 2.

So James Overy is now tied to Australia?

The Philippines were parking the bus. Chloe Lincoln made like two saves all game (both good catches to be fair). We had chances but fucked them up with our poor finishing. We need to focus on improving finishing before the Iran game.
Totally agree that we need to work on shot conversion going into the game against Iran but also the Matildas need to be more aggressively-minded and clinical to counter against teams that are parking the bus.
