World Cup 2026 Australia thread

Mexican sources saying they have 3 friendlies lined up including Australia

Confirmed for 30 May at the Rose Bowl which is not a WC stadium but will be a passionate pro Mexico crowd

Playing the Mexico friendly on the 30th leaves space for 2 more games on the 3rd and 7th June before the opening WC game on the 13th

More likely I think would be a 2nd friendly game around the 4th-6th June, and hopefully that would be against a Euro opponent given our only game against a team from that part of the world in this cycle was a June 2023 friendly against England.

I am not sure who is left, and who has a base camp located in the West or Central to be a convenient opponent logistically.

would be good to do some research on that last point actually

I'm not sure about friendly availability, but based solely off training camp locations (from this website here - https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6974353/2026/02/07/world-cup-2026-training-bases-tracker/)

Qatar
Switzerland
Austria
Maybe Uruguay
Maybe Saudi Arabia

Mexico 5 - 1 Socceroo's, gonna be another bloodbath unless Poppa gets his squad right and the players actually play for the shirt and not TikToc likes why they treat the world cup as just another holiday.

I know I shouldn't react - but I can't help myself. A Popovic side will always be defensively sound and will often get a goal. So the 1 goal part might be right unless he picks the right squad. But the 5 will not happen with Mexico. It might with Spain or France - but not Mexico,

Mexico will be the ideal opponent and will test our squad but that's what we want leading into the group games. A mid level European side such as Austria,Scotland or Switzerland would also be top opponents if we want a second game.
Austria and Switzerland are in the same region for training base, so could be likely

Yet to make his national team debut but the algorithm keeps showing me a few Paraguayans of late.

I certainly respect them but they don't have me nervous like having to face the 2014 Chile. Perhaps it is the more defensive style that means it'll be a grind and we're good at that.

I trust the players we select to relish the world cup opportunity. I keep having visions of the USA turning us inside out in attack due to small lapses.

Our team is a lot better to be honest
