Interview with Les Scheinflug

I called this out 18 to 20 years ago, but 99.9% of forum pundits were firmly onboard the dutch bandwagon.

Curriculums, methodologies, TLA's, FFS 😂

Do you think that was because of Hiddink?

Your right regarding AFL, It is the closest to any form of "tribalism" we have here... not sure if NRL fans are the same btw.... but the AFL club down here is a cradle to the grave sort of thing.
That's true. I've followed AFL my whole life and love it. I also love Football. I struggle with how AFL has treated Football and the general attitude towards it.

I think the media perpetuates that divide a lot. People don't see through it. No one will admit it but I think there's a underlying element of racism/fear of migrant communities to it all.

100% Hence why many early Greek and Italian migrants and their families are rusted on AFlLfans to this day.. In a way they HAD to assimilate to survive.

My father in law tells me of lates 50s working life and how, he and a buddy would take the foreman to Collingwood games and shout him a slab (from their meagre funds) every Saturday so that they could get overtime shifts and extra hours.... it was the only way to be accepted.

I think they do in AFL. But it's limited to the AFL teams. Collingwood recently dropped their netball team. There was a lot of resentment from many in the supporter base at the expense of running the team. That the resources should be put into the AFL program or otherwise invested in business or philanthropic interests. This caused issues at a board level. It's too myopic and insular.
I’ve maintained for years that if Carlton SC had won the ‘98-‘99 NSL season and the ensuing Oceania Champions League to qualify for the inaugural Club World Cup in 2000 instead of South Melbourne..that could’ve been the sliding-doors moment to change the whole 🇦🇺 code-wars situation in ⚽️‘s favour.

Seeing Carlton (founded 1864) taking on Manchester United (1878)..that would’ve been something. Don’t get me wrong, I take nothing away from how South represented Oz football w/utmost pride and dignity in that tournament but in the historical context of the code-wars here, it would’ve been symbolic indeed seeing the AFL club-derived Carlton(or likewise the NRL club-derived Parramatta Power, had they been good enough) taking the field against giant clubs of world-football like ManU and Vasco da Gama🙏🏼

Why ive said it’s a cancer in part.
The racism forced many more down there to be rusted on supporters to be accepted correct.
It’s a blue collar game - vic melb is a socialist state might I add and run by the greens You silly buggas :)
Yer we had it a bit up here not as bad meaning thrown down the throat and dictated here I felt it was more so as Warren wrote being a Sydney bloke Sheila’s Wogs Poofters.
You were a sissy playing football so you’d follow a nrl side - imagine going to football training and I put on a nrl shirt I pleaded poppa to get.

Why I stir up you 3/4 gen - Fark that game.

By the way even though it makes sense that these 2 so called he man codes should have extended their clubs portfolio - fuck them they both have scared many many they don’t deserve our game that they have slandered abused - one day one day in future gens that afl will not be as you see it - football will get on top due to the violence to mummy’s ahead, the hidden racism in towards indigenous - the rorting hiding so much - want it to burn ala a Troy :)

Oh I believe timing is a wonderful thing especially re the GG - it was the perfect storm Guus coming in.
Our players were all at great stages of their careers - having someone like him with all the euro experience and with so many playing abroad just popped !
That was 20plus yrs in the making pre 06.
One was the belief by the ethnics involved in 74 that lit the fire belief and progressed having many 1st gen born Aussie wogs coming through the ranks.
A ride through the storm :) YNWA haha

So the Dutch have made three WC final games and lost.Population wise they are a long way behind Brazil,Italy ,Germany,Spain,France,Argentina and EnglandTo get that far their football philosophy can't be too bad .If the Socceroos could make the final 8 of the WC finals everyone here would be overjoyed so perhaps the Dutch football ideas aren't as bad as some posters make out.

As for Aussie Rules which I still regard as a Victorian game, not withstanding strong followings in WA,SA and Tassie, it beats its chest and proclaims itself the greatest football code but in world terms and even in Australian participation rates is really a minor sport outside of Melbourne. In Sydney the Swans are followed by ex Victorians, bandwaggoners and some of inner city elite but otherwise most up here could not give a s..t about it

I don't think following the dutch initially was a bad idea, they still one of the best in terms of youth development and also has shaped FC Barcelona to become the club they are now but like anything is what we learned from them and did we apply it best to our landscape.

Given the way how insular and narrow minded this part of the world can be I don't think we learned from that experience well, contrast to Japan who learned from the Brazilian and Germans and apply it to their own football landscrape and we now see how they have evolved as a football nation.

Curious in that case why we wouldnt want to look to country who had actually WON a world cup instead of the ugly bridesmaids?

If there a couple countries they should have looked, Brazil and Germany come close to my mind lol.
Warren luved us to look into Brazil alot more - though that hasn't gone well for couple of decades overall but thats a given cycles are cycles.
One we should have followed was due to our roots/ethnic background of the game way back was FORZA Italia as well.
Techincal/brilliant defensively through those decades, individualism, and a few+1 WC's :)
Funny they won in 06, yes Neil got slam dunked.

I've mentioned before we have lost our early DNA, keeping a little of our physicality is another, look at the winning argies.
GG had the mix of brawn and play.
One our strengths have weakenned, 2 we should have looked into mixing alot of pedigree for it was right through our own players, cro/greek/italian and the anglo aggro.
Dutch was made due to Cruyff, sure its been immense and the spanish really clicked his phylosophy (helps when you got players who have that learning ability to play that way) but its not the same for all.
Anyway here we are, dutch football - 2 divides still in our game, a closed shop reducing #'s of developing future payers, and bloody afl hahaha

Brazil would have interesting considering their strong emphasis on futsal and street football culture, the late Johnny Warren loved about them for that and thought it could have helped us along with our traditional traits.

Anyway there are bigger issues as you said lol.

It would be no skin off my nose if Australian Rules Football itself died(hell, it’s already dead to me these past 20+ years)..but IMHO it would be a cultural tragedy if its traditional VIC clubs, which have been around since 1858 and indeed pre-date every ⚽️ club on Earth today(w/the exception of Sheffield FC) were to keel over & pop their clogs.

Of course, this is all hypothetically-moot anyway but it’s my way of saying that those clubs should be salvaged into outliving the village-code they were forged in, should it ever come to that.

AFL will never die, in Melbourne at least, mate .... well at least not for the foreseeable future....

This is exactly how I see it. We are closer in everything in population, lifestyle, etc than a Brazil, which really does rely on natural talent.
As for AFL pfttt, I agree.
