AFL thread

Say what you will about afl they get shit done. While football is a bunch of seagulls fighting over a chip
TBF it's infinitely-easier to run a sport literally played nowhere else on Earth at a level worth a semi-damn, than it is to fvck up real football in this country or most anywhere..

All these afl fans are going on about that player cheating on his partner the last few months that's pretty boring I hope some of them can follow another sport or do something more interesting

These fucking people truly are as detached from reality as the pro-MAGA cookers in 🇺🇸

Membership numbers inflated by Kayo subscribers who don't even follow the club!

I'm shocked that something that was promoted like this...

... somehow never really took off.
To be fair the concept of AFLX was flawed from the start and nobody would have been interested in the bold marketing strategy they were going for since it doesn't really fit with the traditional fanbase of the sport.

Yeah, my understanding was that they were trying to come up with a version of AFL that could be played on soccer pitches with less players required to try and expand overseas.

I get "being in love with a particular sport" and "wanting to see it grow", but it never fails to amaze me how many AFL fans seem to think that overseas expansion is just a case of showing to the rest of the world and they'll just automatically fall in love with it.

FWIW, that specific mindset isn't as pervasive across Aussie Rules-fandom now as it was back in the '90s-early '00s; don't get me wrong, there are still some that do buy into it(not least of all the code's actual admin.) but for the most part they've pretty much let that go. Driving the rugbys to extinction north of The Barassi Line would pretty much suffice for them...

Matey, at the end of the day, this sporting attempt at colonizing is ALL about money and reaching new markets...

To my eyes, what AFL is trying to do in India and China is no different to what Spanish football does holding Cup finals in Saudi or what cynical EPL clubs do to their tired players at the end of a gruelling season, trotting them out to Asia, Australia and the US to play exhibition matehes jersey selling branding events..

That being said, the NFL playing matches o/s is a much-more-accurate analogy(even though most of the rest of the world has actually heard of gridiron, as opposed to the aerial-pingpong)
