Past Socceroos Chat

I remember a while ago someone asking if tim cahill would make it today

Well if we had a choice between irvine and prime cahill we definitely choose cahill by some margin, and irvine is a captain for a lower bundesliga side

I suspect even today, prime cahill is a regular for a mid table big 5 side

Prime Tim Cahill would walk into most modern Premier League teams' starting 11. As would Harry Kewell, Mark Schwarzer and Mark Viduka (plus others possibly) in their primes.

I'd just arrived in Melbourne in 2000 to watch Olyroos play in Sydney Olympics. Turn around on the airport escalator and I'm "MARK VIDUKA!" On his own, no chaperones, he gave me a big grin, brief chat and good to see he's looking as fit as he was then
That's actually mad! I woulda been two years old back then lol.

no arument from me but during some discussions here there are those who say otherwise.

Ol TC still throwing his body on the line.
How was Marcelo's footwork still.
Some great cutting backlines open play viewing despite some over sized bellys haha

Wow CR7 is way ahead of everyone else. Is it cause he plays in Saudi where he gets paid a shit ton (plus has a giant personal following) or would other clubs actually pay that much for him?

Mark retired at 43 which is quite old. Managed to win back to back Premier Leagues though. Proves he was a high quality keeper.

Yes. Plus it's Ronaldo. He's a multi generational talented player too.

I think Cristiano Ronaldo is only garnering that high of a market value partly because he plays in Saudi Arabia but also due to how high calibre of a player he is, and definitely agree that Mark Schwarzer is a high-quality keeper if he managed a transfer value of a million euros at age 41 in addition to winning back-to-back premierships in England.

3/4 of that list is keepers. Ronaldo is a freak to still be so fit after 41, and Ibrahimovic had a great publicity team.

First time I've seen a compilation that includes harry Kewell general play and near misses

will we ever see a player of his quality again? Nearly a complete player

- Fast
- Good at beating a player on the outside
- Good at beat a player on the inside
- Good at beating a player with his back to goal
- Good at progressing the ball through dribbling
- Good at progressing the ball with a killer forward pass
- Good handling speed
- Good at defending from the front
- Below average at opening passing lanes (at least the games I've watched from his time at leads, around 15 games)
- Outstanding defending from the front
- Good header
- Great shooter from range
- Ok decision maker
- Ok accuracy from inside the box
- Ok at shooting with non preferred foot
- Creative
- Outstanding first touch
- Good agility
- Ok strength
- Outstanding clutch ability (showing mental strength)

So few weaknesses and so many strings to his bow. Even with his injury record one of the best players in his position in the 15 or so years he played

I think some Socceroos youth prospects definitely have the potential to reach the quality of Harry Kewell, but they will ultimately still have their flaws and won't be nearly as well-rounded players.
Yeah I'll be honest I don't see any player anywhere near him

I think we have a good chance of producing bresciano/grella/emerton/neill quality players though...
