NPL 2026

At the end of the day, no matter where they live, there is still a lot of Greeks in that inner city part close to Belmore, so that's not an excuse.

Lets face it, they don't have any other Greek clubs that they can compete with in NPL like South Melbourne do in Melbourne.

They should be getting the numbers but they dont, like i said they dont care. The generation that is in their 40s & 50s now is who let the younger generations down in my opinion.

Summary (approximate)

~25,500 people in Sydney were born in Greece (2021 census).

  • ~78,000 people in NSW speak Greek at home, most of whom live in Sydney.
  • Hundreds of thousands more in Greater Sydney likely identify as having Greek ancestry (but would not be counted in the Greece-born figure). National totals suggest over 400,000 Greek-ancestry Australians, with a significant share in Sydney.

straight back down i hope.

I've looked at the sydney demographics and my mind cant be changed. Olympic should be huge. Comparing them to Preston and Melbournes outer North. Sydney Greek in Earlwood, Belmore and Marrickville absolutely dwarfs it. We (South) have borderline nothing compared to them as well.
Still a few left in Malvern, South Yara, Prahran, St Kilda and Albert Park/South Melb but not even a fraction compared to what it was in the 70s-80s All the people I know moved out to Doncaster or SE subs long time ago.

A few, add Port Melb as well, but absolutely nothing like what Olympic has in close proximity.
I don't think Sydney people realise how far most of us drive to get to South games... I mean 3/4 of the seasons away games are closer to my house than Lakeside is... I think one of the main reasons keeping us together though HAS to be the stability of our home ground and the fact it is at least sort of central to all... Apart from moving 700-800 meters across the lake we have been in the same spot since 1959..

Thats NOT what I heard from the Olympic supporters last year...
Don’t tell me its the younger set of supporters that showed their faces for 2 games waving Russian and Serbian flags lol. Half of them are ex Wanderers involved people and then never to be seen again.

In general, greeks here are pretty much skips with their grandparents coming here (a few re’s day to day) whilst maso, you still have a chunk of the parents coning here. Little to none issues in Sydney.

I have heard this

How come south have had always played close to the city rather than somewhere in the suburbs?

Was there a massive Greek population in the area before everyone started scattering around Melbourne

Absolutely ..... EVERYONE lived within 5 kilometres.

The only place some Greeks moved to immediately was, ironically, Oakleigh. But starting in the early 70's, they spread to the next inner ring of sururbs.

The problem is, that some of the next generation have move even FURTHER out.

One friend of mine has stopped going to matches because he lives so far away

Maybe not 5 minutes but probably 10 minutes, especially factoring in traffic in those days being minimal.

In any case this migration to suburbia was pretty much complete by the mid 80s. It never affected the club in the nsl, the club benefited from its central location, its a killer for npl though.

Avondale have officially announced their new squad, with 20 of 23 players tagged - so turns out the Canberra striker was Maxx Green, the United winger was Ayouk Mow, and the defender I couldn't figure out was Jacob Muir signed from Monterey Bay
Also Marcus Ferkranus and Murphy Bennett are there
