Former Adelaide United left back and central midfielder Josh Cavallo, who famously came out as gay in 2021 and became the first openly gay man to play professional top flight soccer, has made serious accusations against the new management of Adelaide United.

In an Instagram post, Josh suggested that the reason he began lacking game time at the club was not due to his performances, but due to his sexual orientation. The 26-year-old, who played 49 games for the Reds, has since moved to the UK. He previously played for Petersborough Sports in the National League North (NLN; the sixth tier of English football), but only spent a year there before moving to where he currently plays at Stamford in the Southern Football League Premier Division Central (SFL PDC; the seventh tier of English football).

While some seem to be on his side, noting that homophobia is still an issue in men's football. However, others have criticised him, and claimed that his performances were the reason he could not stay in the A-League, noting that his performances were "NPL-level".

You are free to comment on the situation, hence why I made this thread, but please do not make homophobic comments or use homophobic slurs. You can criticise his comments, but don't criticise him for being gay.

It's hilarious how things always go wrong. When he came out it's world wide news now years later we get this it's really how it always works in Australia football

He played only 4 games for Peterborough Sports in that 12 months - has he made the same accusation about them as well?

There were better players in the NPL and Adelaide United still gave this spud a 2-3 year contract extension. I assume to feed off his instagram page because as a player he belongs in the amateurs.

:ROFLMAO:

The guy was useless, and the only reason why he got so much attention is because he came out gay.

He said this several months ago. Given the dodgy nature of Adelaide United's ownership it is hardly a surprise.
Given that he was only good enough for an occasional sub appearance, he seems to be beating it up a bit.

People will tend to look at this in an A and B way.
Either A is true of B is true.
However it's very possible both A and B are true.
It's possible he experienced homophobia at the club.
It's also possible his performances weren't good enough (or at least not better than a competing teammate).
Those two scenarios are not mutually exclusive.
It's also possible that if A was true, that it might effect his performances.
The club will obviously deny. If they admit to anything, it could open the door for a lawsuit.
Sadly, regardless of what is true, he'll probably cop a bunch more hate for this statement.

Apparently when he was there he had a direct number to the cops or something to report abuse so if he did that it would prove that this isn't true.

The game he was booed against MV, was clearly because he was time wasting, but ran to the press saying it was homophobia.

Seems to be a pattern here.

Having said that, based on tehe hysterical response from adelaide fans against MV fans, I can say that out of all his accusations, these ones are definitely true. I'd strip tehm of their license just to be sure.

That in itself is kinda sad though. In the women's game it's basically normalised, a public coming out video would be considered odd unless they were from a less accepting country. It seems odd that in the men's game still shocks people that a player is gay in such an accepting country like Australia (though football is global which is probably part of it).

Ditto Western United winning a championship then folding, or Mariners winning a treble and going on a fairytale run to win the ALW grand final only to go into administration.

I know people only read what they want to read but he said if he got bullied if that's true stinks of a bad culture in Adelaide
Oh yeah if the photo thing is true (he accused former teammates of mocking a photo of him and his boyfriend) then they should be forced to apologise.

Yeah that's the thing, it could be partially real but also partially made up. Personally I think fans or even staff might have called him a few names but I doubt he was dropped for being gay.
