OFC Professional League 🌏

I dont think its too much of a football thing as it is a foreign affairs, trade opportunity.. Hosting the HUB for two weeks at Lakeside gives the state goverment access to delegates from the Pacific....
Serious question big man why are you allowed to play in an Oceania competition, when Australia is no longer part of Oceania.

Why are Auckland and Wellington allowed to play in the A league they aren’t part of Asia
I often wonder myself. Did it have something to do with the Kings being part of the NSL, so they had dispensation? Saying that ,the Football kingz were in the A league at formation, and Australia was still in Oceania at the time.

I can understand (didnt agree then either) as part of Oceania that NZ side had come into NSL as we were same confed... why it continued after we AU joined Asia is a valid question! As is why is SMFC allowed to do it now? Well given what is in play i would argue simply bc 'its fair', FA couldnt validly deny this request on the basis of its own doings with the AL, and South wouldnt knock it back as the regions 'team of the century' and bc it offers something it is being denied locally, greater exposure and hopefully another revenue stream!

I dont honestly know mate... For what its worth I dont think we SHOULD be allowed to either, but not going to knock back the opportunity presented.

If it helps, FIFA specifically requested a club from Australia and the Oceania confed was bullish on it being South Melbourne - I presume because of us being a well regarded name in the region???

Yes, a strange decision. Anyway, good luck in the competition.

Ta. Its a shits and giggles league and I dont think any fans will give it the attention it craves... The 2 week hub down here (Im assuming in Jan/Feb) will draw a few to watch some odd match-ups (and may even bring a new demographic of Pacific Island expats to Lakeside) but otherwise Ive been told we are fielding an U23 lineup mostly... IF it brings us a few bucks and some "brand awareness" its served it purpose for me, if we get another trophy to add to the cabinet brilliant, if not... no big deal. Im more interested in what we do in NPL next year.

Is there a link to what prize money is available from this competition?
The initial announcement from 2021 i believe was the following:
A total purse of $175,000 will be up for grabs with $75,000 for the winner, $50,000 for second and $25,000 for the teams that finish third and fourth.

The article from memory said the funding pools like tv and sponsorship deals were to come on top of that amount which is just prize money for the clubs.

The article was from OFC website from memory.

I believe that this relates to the former OFC Champions League competition.

The OFC Professional League is pretty much funded by FIFA. For us to spend so much time on a competition that does not offer us the avenue to the Club World Cup, the prize money must be pretty substantial to make it a worthwhile exercise.

Considering that the winner will potentially playing in an Inter Continental competition where you will get a couple of million from FIFA just for showing up I'd be taking it very seriously if I was your club hierarchy.

I thought it did offer a pathway to the CWC.
