Socceroos vs Canada/USA Oct 25

Did he make any comments about the inclusion of Robertson? I haven’t had time to watch the presser.
From memory, he said that he became aware about a month ago of Robertson's availability for the Socceroos. It appears there was contact after that which has given rise to his selection this window.

Poppa didn't elaborate as to what he meant by Robertson's availability. We can continue to speculate, though I don't know if we'll ever know exactly the ins and outs thereof.

Roberstson should not be selected. . What’s he done besides be petulant?

He making less of an impact at a lower standard than 4 or 5 midfielders at least.
He's injured a lot. Thats doing something.

I don't mind it. Popovic is experimenting and casting a wider net. Robertsons come to the table. The timing is a bit cynical to me, but he'll get judged in camp. We still have few midfield technicians so I'm happy Robertsons getting a look in.

It still boggles Luongo's out in the cold though.

Given the friendly in Denver, I asked AI which WC26 venues are at altitude, and got this answer.

The World Cup 2026 venues at altitude are in Mexico City and Guadalajara, Mexico. These two Mexican cities will host matches in high-altitude environments, unlike the other 13 host cities, which are at or near sea level.

High-Altitude Venues

  • Mexico City: Will host matches at high altitude.
  • Guadalajara: Will also host matches at high altitude.
Other Host Cities
  • The other host cities are located in Canada and the United States and are generally at or near sea level, not experiencing high-altitude conditions.
Good preparation if we end up playing in either of those two high altitude venues.

I mean you've clearly never watched Robertson because his pedigree alone is worth his selection in this type of experimental side. He's been injured and now trying to compete to show his fitness the past couple weeks to make the squad/as well as having other clubs after him, unsure if he'll even stay in Cardiff after the transfer window. Saying he makes less of an impact is a strange take when currently he isn't playing but when he was the last few seasons he was great at both Cardiff and Portsmouth. There's a reason why people want him in the team and there is a reason he is being selected coming off of an injury without game-time because they know his ability. He's isn't playing at a lower level because the last time he played he was in the Championship which is equal to a lot of the midfielders and he was making a greater impact than all of them besides maybe Irvine and McGree, but technically surpasses both.

Your comment screams resentment.

Robertson is better than others blind and on one league. His play and goals so far have been excellent. Issue is his current fitness but exposing him to the set up is very positive.

So a player can be injured, not performing and not want to be there but we select him on pedigree. What a take. You should be a selector.

Im the future sure. Not now. No way deserves it.
I agree with that. He hasn't played the minutes. While we needed to get him into the system it's not on merit this time. His case is so stupid that now the appeasing of exposing him to the set up goes against Popovic's philosophy.

In saying that exceptional talents get put ahead of others.

That didn't stop Okon getting a spot. Same with Duke a lot of the time and there is simply no way anyone can say we haven't had alternatives in the past 24 months.

This who were calling for nisbet saying he deserve it and keeps getting left out.. 1 spot left who do you take to US tour tomorrow (no World Cup)

Nisbet or Robertson?

Agree on duke, but he has performed for Australia a specific role at times and played regularly.

also duke want to play his heart out for the team.

Not just choose them when it’s convenient.

I don’t really care if he’s there but all I am saying is he hardly deserves a spot in this moment

The former yet Robertson's case is one of multiple eligibility and he is an exceptional player we want to tie down. If this were someone else it'd be a different story.

I don't agree with how he's carried on and it's interesting how Popovic has opened up to this but the and the team think the conversation and trial is worth it.

That's not always true. Duke had a lot of poor performances where we delayed potential chances for the neglect generation of strikers.

It really depends on why he isnt getting minutes. If its just injury and he is still a key player than its ok to have a look at him

He was strong in the championship last year at an age younger than any of our other cm that we have at the moment. So he is probably a similar level to balard oniel and triantis but a lot younger. If he turns out to be good enough to get roo minutes at his age, then that bodes well for the future.

I strongly doubt poppa is the type of coach who is too eager to give the next big thing minutes before they are ready, quite the opposite

So if he gets minutes it means he has shown in training he is ready imo

My take is a reply to your take that "he is making less of an impact at a lower standard" which simply isn't true. I'm telling you why you should understand there motive in selecting him. I myself would select him to try him out but respect why others wouldn't. But the reality is, you are picking and choosing here, there are quite a few players who similarly aren't being selected for current form and perhaps are picked on potential or past performances.

I definitely think he is better technically than the three you mentioned. Our ability would increase pretty significantly with him in midfield with all the other outlets we have. But they've tracking Robertson for a while, he's been injured at Cardiff and hasn't proved his fitness or readiness to come back and now the Roos are taking a look at him. But he was playing last season regularly.

I know it's kind of different but it's also not, other players like Irvine, McGree, Souttar are probably going to walk into this squad after injury with zero minutes and it's fine because of their merit. Even Popa was saying in the presser about Duke, how his performances against Japan and Saudi Arabia seem to have secured him into the World Cup squad even without minutes or higher level of play at club land. Popovic definitely seems to select merit over club form i.e Segecic but Robertson is an individual case where they are giving a player with very good club merit a chance to look at him as he is in "a situation" at Cardiff currently.
