NPL 2026

Thanks Nic. And NSW being the most populous state, does that mean Manly and Sutherland have the most registered players in all of Australia?
I would assume so - it's going to be tough to tell, spots in Melbourne may give them a close run - I don't think Victoria breaks down their registered numbers info down (at least not in their annual report) by suburbs or anything like that, not even by metro/regional from what I saw. I would also assume the same for most other states - as it appears that NSW is really the only state that breaks down Metro areas in to regions like that (officially, at least)

Confirmation of this (at least the NPL level) by Capital Football after their declaration of leagues released yesterday

Two things interesting to note:
  • ANU listed as Decided not to participate in NPL Men in 2026 rather than Relegated from CPL Men to Capital League Opens Division 1 despite not having a full youth program in CF NPL / Junior League, one of the new criteria for being part of NPL according to Capital Football
  • Gungahlin United are required to respond to existing issues already raised by CF separately as part of an ongoing compliance requirement - which is the financial stuff going on, so could still very possibly be a 9 club NPL next season

Time for me to get started on the 2026 database and map I think....

Yes true it’s in that very mixed code border catchment that would muddy the waters a bit.
Hence why I think just over 3K is low and as mentioned where do all the varied age regos fit by competition.
League and afl is strong there as mentioned.
I even recall ol Sterling was a Wagga Jnr from memory.
The Mortimer brothers are Wagga Wagga's finest exports, played for Turvey Park. Sterling is actually a Toowoomba boy.

Yep re Sterlo but check his bio the fam moved to Wagga and he started there making his name - I recall this was mentioned many times back in the day before getting a scholarship to Patrician bros Fairfield leading into the Eels.
So he was plucked identified during his Wagga young tenure years.
Good ol Mortimers - now thats another good fam - funnily like the Sterlings moved down to Wagga when Steve was young - all born Sydney I see.

West & SE melbourne would certainly be higher, probably north too

Not sure about Melbourne being higher with AFL there being so massive. In Sydney NRL is popular as a spectator sport but not so much as a participation sport. Interesting that Manly and Canterbury have around the same numbers or slightly more than Sutherland. For years people have been saying that Sutherland has the most registered players in the whole of Sydney, even the whole of Australia.

This is the best I can break down for Victoria - FFV had this breakdown in 2010 - not numbers, but at least in terms of probably how far they could define it if they really wanted to.

It's probably worth noting that the Goulburn North East Zone, as far as I'm aware, no longer exists, and is probably split into an extended Loddon Mallee and Gippsland zones (given that the Benalla, Greater Shepparton, etc clubs all play as part of the Bendigo association now)

EDIT:
OK, I've kind of got figures, but outdated. By 10 years...
FFV released the State Facilities Strategy for 2016-2026 (in 2016) at https://footballvictoria.com.au/sites/ffv/files/2018-12/FV_Facilities_Strategy.pdf, which, according to this webpage - https://footballvictoria.com.au/facilities-and-schools/facilities-strategy - is due to be updated shortly (Q3 2025, so they're already behind? Surprise, surprise)

9,276 in 2016 in Western Melbourne (Melton, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham) is my calculation of the highest in Melbourne (assuming that 10,204 is 110% of the 2016 registered numbers):

Cheeez you’d never have reckoned
Raiders and UNSW in top flight.
What a shuffle will be interesting how they go.
BWE what a fall.

Hearing SD Raiders will up their fee's once again to all the 30+ Junior clubs as they want to spend big to stay in the league. They are already one of the most expensive associations in NSW.

Patrick Antelmi rumored to be joining SD Raiders for $900 a week if not more.

Parents need to wake up and call them out but they won’t not move their kid/s to the neighbouring association.

Domenic Costanzo who joined APIA for the Championship from Marconi, will be going back to Adelaide for 2026.

Hearing backing to Adelaide City.

Not a fan of association's having clubs in the pyramid.

Neither - either all associations are welcome to do so, or none at all.

IF, however, NSW State Leagues were to allow regional areas into the competition, I would be open to regional associations having clubs in the pyramid (Wagga City, Griffith FC, Highlands FC, Southern Tablelands United, etc etc)
