Poppa Out

The Gold Coast game against Bahrain I thought our second half was very poor. It was as though our players had never seen a side try to waste time before and we lost our cool a bit.
Bahrain is a team renowned for time wasting tactics.

They can be frustrating to play against.

The worst game I have ever attended and that includes the dead rubber game I paid good money to see in Sydney where they played all A league players and only fielded one known overseas player, Harry Kewell.

That Gold Coast game was an abomination. Still scarred from it.

The game in Sydney you refer to is I assume the one against China. It was our Olympic team they fielded. Harry was meant to be a part of the Olympic team as an over aged player but injury ruled him out. Fortunately I was overseas for that game but managed to find a channel in Macedonia that showed the match. Wish I hadn't. Interestingly at the Gold Coast game Bahrain's goal came about because the ref ignored the Bahraini player rolling on the ground but half our team didn't resulting in a break on the other side of the field and the own goal from the cross.

I was at that China game. Utter hell. We were through but it was a pain. Remember the Chinese player taken off on the stretcher then sprang back to life?

I was at that China game too. Made a snap decision with my mate that morning, we bought match tickets and booked flights from Brisbane to Sydney, flew down, watched the game and flew back that evening (just managed to get to the airport in time for the last flight).
What a waste of money!

He has made them almost unwatchable now. But everyone bar the FA knew this would be the case. We will never progress as a football nation if we keep giving jobs for the boys. We should of taken a chance on Morgan, rather then the Poppaball dross we get served every match.

But FA don't care, we are heading to another World Cup, and have the chance to snag some more 1-0's.

We should’ve thrown the chequebook at Bielsa to succeed Ange back in 2016-17…instead the suits got all insecure about what ‘average Aussies’ (ie. see below)…

…would think of having a tango-dancing/asado-eating $p1c who doesnt speak English as our🇦🇺 national coach🙃

The cost was always the barrier that never had him considered.
That being said, being able to speak English matters.

The Bielsa dream though. If only.

Does poppa promote the game?
He has always hated the media aspect. Kevin Airs mentioned it years ago after WSW came in, he did what he had to and that was it. This has improved, not everyone is Ange but the extended interview/press conferences up on youtube are really good.

The style of football isn't promoting much though.

It's a media facing role where it matters how the manager promotes the game. It has to be considered
It’s been considered for far longer than it ever should’ve, frankly.

You reckon the Serb media gave a flying root that Avram Grant couldn’t speak a word of Serbo-Croat when he got the Partizan Belgrade coaching gig back in the day❓

I've very little idea about anything outside Australian football, other than surface level stuff. I assume your question is rhetorical anyway.
National team coach and captain matter for promoting football here. Being able to communicate easily with the little media there is remains important.
Maybe Bielsa's personality and style of play would have been enough anyway. He was loved in Leeds I believe.
In any case I doubt it got to discussions about cultural fit, I doubt they even thought about the football aspects. They saw the price tag and that is where things ended.

If we were after a 'media darling' the FA should have encouraged GA to stay until Ange was available, even if he took some 'personal time' and handed over to Rene for a short period.

We have Popovic. He will never be a 'media darling'. The only thing I want is he turns the team into a 'media darling' and starts playing attractive as well as winning football.
