NPL 2025

:) Sure... But also a bit of a genuine question here... what is the crowd like at the Palace? .... are Marconi as a club resonating with the local demographic? I think the "old" and the "new" need to be engaged with to grow our clubs moving forward.
I would say it’s similar to the dynamic to a south Melbourne crowd having been to a number of your games in the post nsl era

Slowly losing hope on a top 6 finish.

Must win against Wollongong this weekend as we have APIA & Rockdale the following weeks.
After all that, Olympic a genuine chance to make the finals. correct me if I’m wrong but they’d have already overtaken you if they hadn’t been docked those 3 points earlier in the year

Yep, they'd be on 35 points now and not 32.

On the 3XY (Radio Hellas) show here in Melbourne, the host, Peter Kotsiris said "Italians are lost to soccer".

I suspect he was looking at it from a Melbourne lense, and if so, he is right to a large extent. They appear to love Australian Rules more than other Southern Europeans. And have NEVER had a big club to unite behind (Brunswick Juventus were too parochial for most Italians to get behind).
Thing is though, they at least support Serie A/other clubs from the old country(and ofc the Azzurri) so it’s not like they’re entirely lost to the sport of ⚽️ per se.

That being said, the uber-assimilated ones who are full-on 🏉 zombies are fcken insufferable; disgrace to their heritage they are😉

Truth is, when Serge Silvagni dominated playing for Carlton in the vfl, most Italians looked up to him and his bloodline as gods, so lots of Italians became vfl/afl fans. Most Italians in Melbourne follow afl/Carlton and don't care for Australian based Italian clubs as much as the other ethnics.

its between Heidelberg United and Dandenong Thunder for Victorian spot in Australian Championship five games to play after Oakleigh Cannons drew 3-3 in their make up game in hand.

Heidelberg United 21 16 3 2 47 19 +28 51

run-in:
Green Gully (away)
South Melbourne (home)
Avondale FC (away)
Oakleigh Cannons (home)
Port Melbourne Sharks (away)

Dandenong Thunder 21 12 5 4 45 28 +17 41

run-in:
Port Melbourne Sharks (away)
Melbourne Knights (home)
Melbourne Victory (home)
St Albans Saints (away)
Preston Lions (away)

The Italian club in Melbourne is Carlton... not Brunswick Juve Avondale or Bulleen
Yes, a lot of them do go for Essendon and Collingwood as well.

Being a kid attending a catholic primary school in the early 90s i'd say 50% of the school was Italian, none of them knew the nsl existed, all mad afl supporters.

Can confirm all of the above re Italians in Melbourne, I have relatives there who fall into all the sets of circumstances listed. But yes, that was in the situation in Melbourne, things played out slightly differently in Sydney for myriad of reasons already discussed. That was the Melbourne experience, not the Australian experience

Melbourne Italians support, Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Essendon and if they like soccer theyll generally support Melb victory due to the historic link to traditional clubs being broken by the mergers and de mergers. Many believe Brunswick juventus doesn’t exist anymore

Oh well, good luck to them in the lower league next year. Hopefully some competitive clubs come up next year.

Bergers have done and dusted this comp weeks ago... just playing out the records now! After Gully it will be mathematically written also!

I wonder if it’ll do them some good having a year down. Regroup and come back Ala Preston. Maybe it’s the kick up the backside the club seems to need.

They’ve been a rival to south in a historical sense only post nsl. They’ve barely even made finals let alone challenged in the league in recent years. All the other ex nsl clubs who dropped back to the state leagues at the conclusion of the nsl have won multiple trophies/been there or there abouts most years

Just another ex nsl team living in their past glory, thinking they are still a big relevant club. One down, few more to go. They'll probably get humbled as Preston did, in the lower leagues.
