How to fix football in Australia... James Johnson joins for insightful interview

No sure, but I don't think he mentioned the Championship once?
Not even in passing!
What a shame, with a proper football reporter perhaps it couldve been a more interesting interview, and not a self rub up of "wishes and dreams" and in the end zero substance...

Either way, he is the past, and its in our own hands to prove the championship deserves its place at the football table.

Reporter was weak however... At 10:21 he gives IMO some insightful comments... he suggested at around 12:00 what APL needs to do...

I guess the only content was that he thought the main focus of the fa shohld be the national teams

I would like to see the main focus being on growing the bottom of the disconnected pyramid. Get a participation rate of 6 million
Exactly that... the "dream" of some mainstream that will be somehow hardened on to our code still prevails (god knows why) and thats the biggest thorn, for as long as it stays in place!

Yes tbh it was disappointing imo.
I understand the importance of our 2 NT’s but they are Not nor should be the main focus in growing the game and the Knick off effect relying on post hosting tournaments might I add.
Ground up is the key for growth and building blocks after the NT revenue etc….
As for the wish or mention the APL link or leverage better what’s around them has some merit if only they did give a toss but to leverage only what suits them and not care how they do it.
Yer a nothing much post CEO headline that was quite empty.

Let me apologise to the forum....

I should have realised the most important thing JJ did to start the second tier .... and of course the most important thing moving forward is he should talk about the second tier...

No idea he was so out of touch with his advise pertaining to the next CEO needs to develop a new vision and direction and work on what he has set up.... and that APL should learn how to capitalise on National teams success and better connect to the park teams as that was the question asked......

Again my apologise, that JJ did not mention the second tier well its unbelievable as we all know to mention that the Matilda's growth and success which helped bring me a massive boost in funding (which in part is paying for the second tier) and their smashing all ratings ever is nowhere near as important as talking about the second tier, or the huge increase in players numbers.... nothing compares....

I think you need to lie down a little mate... or at least have a snack or something.... Keep praying on the APL to "capitalise" on Matilda's success and prey on "park teams" that'll fix it....

No need to apoligise Middy - we know you have the best interests for the game like all/us.
I've never sat in a boardroom that everyone agrees on the presentation or proposal its ok mate.
Everyone sees/reads things differently.
Everyone would agree NT revenue is important but so is other points that for a person of his stature and past position you'd think there would have been some inkling not just about Championship but the leagues below than are under his/their watch for its part of what counter funds the NT's as well and the FA.
Maybe it was the intereviewers error not asking more open questions but I degress and apoligise my posting upset you.

Nah mate, the interviewer straight asked him about FA being involved in leagues and the question was dodged like a dodgy politician... bad news for Championshp AND the Aleagues..... FA just cares about monetizing football now ... some want to celebrate it othesr just care about the sport.

The irony is if the grassroots swells to a good participation rate by football standards (3-6mil) we probably do get mainstream acceptance. And if we dont we have enough cash, clubs and infrastructure to not need it

No one is having a go at you tho?

I dont think that is necessarily true.. Nice to dream about but sort of counter intuitive to whats already happening.. IF 1 million participants doesnt amount to full ALeague stadia, then why would 3 million move the needle?

For one thing tripple the revenue and money talks?

Sure, but getting them to "stick" to a club isnt an easy feat... hundreds of thousands of mums and daughters jumped on the Matilda and "lets play soccer" train after the WWC, how many returned to watch the Ninja league? Or ANY domestic football?
very few

but how many of the 14million brittish football players follow a club rather than saying "I hate watching sports" or watch another sport? Very few

but very few of 14 million is a huge number. Football is a high participation sport and our crowds in both eras as a fraction of the participation rate are on the low end of what is typical globally. Low, but not abnormally low
