Expansion Thread 🪜

How so? I haven't heard anyone in politics express support for South Melbourne's bid.

BTW, fan ownership is when normal supporters fund the club by buying shares totaling over 50.1% of said shares. Is that what you have.

For me ideally the league needs to get to 16 teams. Then we can have an even 30 round H&A competition, none of this "some teams you play 3 times others you play twice" nonsense. 30 games plus Aus Cup (plus ACL/ACL2 for those that qualify) almost warrants enough games to not need finals, but we all know what country we live in.

In addition to the current 12:

- South Melbourne
- Canberra
- Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast for another Queensland team
- Tasmania

If ever in the position to expand to 18 then bring in Wollongong and Christchurch. Haven't included these two in my above 4 as a) NSW has enough teams already; and b) preference for AUS teams over NZ ones purely for the AFC requirements/co-efficients.
Hopefully one day we might see a West Asia Confederation and an East Asia and Oceania Confederation.

As per my post in the western thread, imo potentially the wrong lessons have been learnt from previous successful and failed attempts to set up new entities.

Which are the ones which have broadly succeeded; Perth glory, Adelaide United, Melbourne victory, Sydney fc, western Sydney wanderers. What are examples of failures; Carlton, parramatta power, northern spirit, western United, likely macathur at some point.

If you’re going to set up a new inorganic non ethnically aligned broad based club to appeal to the masses, you make it as broadly appealing as you can. The niche of non ethnically aligned club in Sydney and Melbourne has now been filled. And again, as per my post in the western thread, the only reason wanderers worked is because there was an organic groundswell of demand for such a club at the time for a variety of reasons. No such groundswell exists elsewhere

There clearly isn’t much of a market for very specific new franchises claiming to represent individual suburbs or areas which no one ever asked for.

At the time in the nsl, the blame for the failure of those aforementioned franchises in Sydney and Melbourne was atleast partially assigned to the fact that they were having to coexist in the poisoned marketplace with the traditional clubs. But that’s since been proven untrue as very similar franchises in the a league era are facing comparable struggles. It’s just that they weren’t set up in a way conducive to success, as the likes of the successful “franchises” have been by and large. In hindsight potentially the likes of Sydney fc and Melb victory could have happily co existed in a league with the traditional clubs if done right

If you don’t have a club you’re interested in in Melbourne or Sydney now with the plethora of options you have at your disposal, you’re clearly not that interested and and are unlikely to become a rusted on fan at any stage in the future

Also listen to what the fans are saying, not what you want them to say
Wouldn't any new club wanting to establish itself in one of the big city markets now need a whale ( casino terminology)

......for at least a couple of decades to give the club a chance of creating membership and from anew that would normally have gone to other sports? Do this through community engagement and focus on schools, ticket give-aways etc.

What a disgusting thing to say.

BTW …. I had muted you. I was hoping the forum would automatically apply this to other party.
Get stuffed. Clubs can exist but not in the A League. That was part of the reform.

There are immense benefits for the communities to have these clubs but just not in the A League.

Melbourne City has Moby Dick, has given more free cheeseburgers and ticket giveways than ALL the other franchises combined and still not really moved the dial...

Its NOT the product (football is ALWAYS awesome even at a lesser tempo or level) thats on the nose it the product delivery model.

When it’s machete crime or domestic terrorism it’s all about not blaming the many for the acts of the few. But with football …. 🙄
The idea behind the A League was to attract everyone. That's not to say people aren't welcome at clubs based off a single nationality yet you won't find many newbies going to those clubs. It's Ok. The clubs give a sense of belonging to people from those communities.

Living in Germany you would have seen lots of these sort of "Reform" camps for special "Communities" around the countryside, usually set us as museums huh?

So if people are welcome WHY exactly wont you find any "newbies" at these clubs?
And what do you say to those "newbies" I spoke to on Sunday night "Go away you are NOT real according to some bloke ten thousand miles away" maybe?

I suppose trouble is inevitable in either competition. The issue is the Australian media and police would use the negative examples from ethnic based teams to fire up anti football sentiment again.

The vast majority of supporters are fine but we keep seeing incidents from a number of clubs with ethnic based drama and people just don't want that.

I don't know the Melbourne scene well enough to discuss the specifics of what's gone on at MC. In any case, I think it will continue to be a struggle for top tier football in this country, unfortunately.

What percentage of people who've started going to games in the last 10 years at South Melbourne are non Greek?

Thankfully there's a strong core of that community to get good crowds alone. It's probably enough anyway. What I'm saying is you won't get many people of no Greek heritage saying 'let's go down the Greek club'. It doesn't resonate with them.

Yeah they're around. When I first started reading I thought you were going to mention ethnic based clubs in Germany. Türkgücü München have just released their new kit. It's the Turkish national team kit. It's just ridiculous and no one from outside has any interest in going there.

The local Hannover divisions have clubs from nearly every European background and there's drama every week. I get there are deep wounds from the past and some idiots use these clubs as a crusade for trouble. That's not to say ultras aren't the same with their clubs that simply represent a city.

Think whatever you want mate, Ive gone blue in the face arguing otherwise. I sat next to two lovely older blokes on Sunday, never seen them before in my life, South Melbourne locals, who say the pop ups stand at the South Melbourne market the previous day and thought they'd come and have a sticky. One of them remembered the old Bob Jane NSL days fondly and had been a few times with a, since moved away, son. Both mentioned a few older players by name, both South and Socceroos and said they liked the match and would be back in the Summer for the Championship as they lived "a stones throw".
