Maybe it's just me but whenever I have watched watford or seen irankunda in an aus game against strong teams he goes missing or can't hold the ball. Is he getting a deal off one goal at the WC? I am sure the good folks at Sporting know more about football than some idiot on the internet though

It's hard to know from highlights and a few NT matches but I get the same impression. He's got that incredible athleticism and capacity to do stuff, but he just look so raw.

I would much rather that Natta, Serie B, and Clayton Taylor, English L1, have gone to Championship, MLS, Belgium, Swiss, Eredivisie, Austria, Japan, Turkey instead. Maybe Saudi too?

You give me any Socceroo playing outfield and I can find weaknesses if I’m familiar enough with their game.

Herrington, if he has that subtle weakness, will likely overcome it soon.

The point is it has been there and noticed by me and a lot of Roar fans for a while. It is something that should be easily overcome. With 3 CBs in the Australian management team it was noticeable as well in the lead up friendlies and in the World Cup games.

As a CB it should be something that is very coachable - disappointing that it wasn't addressed by them. But as I said.

Herrington more likely to succeed as he simply needs to get rid of a bad habit of stepping back in anticipation of a break and upsetting the offside trap.

Beach on the other hand has to develop a skill. He is great shot stopper - but he is not modern keeper, his sweeping and control of his defence is not there - yet. Control of his defence will come with confidence in his place in team - simple. Sweeping is a skill though where he is very iffy - he can do it well at times but can have some shockers. Wasn't shown playing for Australia and people noticed his very good distribution with his hands - but his sweeping needs a lot of work. Alex said in a previous pod that Troyes plays relatively deep for a CFG club so hopefully they can work on that in the background before he gets found out.

I haven't watched him at Watford - but he scored and played well in the one game when played as an inside forward. When played as a CF he struggled.

I've thought Beach has been a reasonable sweeper, who probably had more pressure against Turkey and USA than ever before. Apart from being able to appraise sweeping I'm no keeper expert though.

In formal goal keeper courses they have divided it into 3 facets in Aus.

He has had some shockers in the ALM and I used to see him playing in the NPL system for the Mariners where he was quickly dropped. I don't think he has improved in that area - just been in a very strong ALM side and caught out at times.

This has been a consistent criticism of Gauci in his time in England - more specifically, that his distribution is poor. Fan consensus seems to be that it was a factor, perhaps the main reason, he was dropped to the bench at Port Vale. He was reinstated when Jon Brady arrived and his distribution might have improved slightly after that, but not substantially from what I read. Good coaching, of course, can make a difference but so to the determination of the player to improve aspects of his game.

I would be concerned about his move to Sporting if the club hadn't paid a substantial amount to secure his services. You'd think and hope that would indicate an intention to play him a fair bit. I still have some doubts and frankly would have been more confident if they had sought Herrington. Probably would have preferred that too, if I'm to be honest. Anyway, I hope he kicks on and has a successful time there.

A team can be taking a corner and then in a flash up the other end the keeper has to come out and commit to a challenge in a one on one. This is what Sporting are paying for.

I am not sure his talent is world class, but his athleticism appears to be at least, but hopefully you're correct.

Exactly. It's why every man and his dog were fuming when Poppa kept playing him up front. We could have gotten further in the cup if he played him out wide like the first game and didn't sub off his two greatest goal threats early on in that egypt game

Irankunda is finally going to environment where the weaknesses of his game can properly be adressed. Don't mean this as a slight against Watford, but there is a large gap between them and Sporting in the technical dept.

There's a lot of similarities between Nestor and Catamo who looks like he may be off to Sunderland, so he may come in as a direct replacement. Quenda who has gone to Chelsea also has a similar profile to Nestor. So Sporting has a history of recruiting these explosive wingers with elite athleticism.

My pov is that Kewell at his peak was the only genuinely world class player our country has produced. Nestory has someway to go on that measure.

If we're talking one dimensional, Kewell only had one foot, but his peak before he left Leeds when he won the PFA young player of the year award was a site to behold. Different era of football of course.

It's true. What I like at least is Irankunda has scored at a world cup. We had to ckutchbat straws with Arzani and Kuol whose feats were late cameos and a shot on target. Irankunda is thankfully way ahead after we've hoped to have someone young and talented deliver on the big stage.
