Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

It only makes sense that the team that stands in our way from getting our first knockout win is Iran. We haven't played them at all since 1997. Even for the junior team it's rare. It's absolutely insane odds and this just lines up perfectly. They are old and aging, it be another game where we will be attacking. I'm hoping for this match-up.

Greece scored in EVERY SINGLE game of Euro 2004, but sure, draw the lazy insult rather than discuss the current failings.
 
I want New Zealand to make it through but I don't want them to play us. Imagine we lost to New Zealand in the knockouts of a World Cup. It would be one of the worst losses in our history.

That game in 1997 broke my then 13 year old heart, never ever got over that.

I'd dearly love to see us play those cretins again and this time beat them.

OK - so here's where things stand in Group G

Current table:
Egypt 4pts +2 GD
Iran 2pts 0 GD 2GF
Belgium 2pts 0 GD 1 GF
NZ 1pt -2GD

Egypt v Iran
New Zealand v Belgium

As usual, 9 outcomes (I won't go into GD unless it's likely it affects who qualifies - at base level, I've applied 1-0 wins or 0-0 draws):
  • Egypt wins AND New Zealand win = Egypt 1st, NZ 2nd, Iran 3rd (and eliminated)
  • Egypt wins AND BEL/NZ Draw = Egypt 1st, Belgium 2nd, Iran 3rd (and eliminated)
  • Egypt wins AND Belgium win = Egypt 1st, Belgium 2nd, Iran 3rd (and eliminated)
  • EGY/IRN draw AND NZ win = Egypt 1st...

Even though NZ should be the best option on paper for us I would be terrified of that matchup as if NZ wins the Kiwis will hold it over us forever :)

Yeah that is the problem when NZ beat us in anything. They forget how generous we are to allow them to be something other than a poor state of Australia.

I think an Iran match might have the most hype.
