Socceroos vs USA 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺 🇺🇸

Great result for us in the paraguay game. Draw or win in the next game and we are through to 2nd!
I am wondering how good our win over Turkey really was, but mentally they were struggling,

I would have preferrred 1-1. But Turkey would not have scored if the game went for another 100 minutes.

A win like that might fire Paraguay up, they look like a scrappy counter-attacking side with lots of niggling tactics

They have a suspended player who played for Newcastle United until last season

Why would you have preferred 1-1? There's much, much less in our hands in that instance.

He was really struggling after the own goal and I was glad when Poppa took him off,

Surely we have a better option?

The next game is the vital game for us, we must win or draw.
Herrington if we make the change.

I think we only need to draw against Paraguay to secure second so they might have to be more proactive against us.

Nestory Irankunda is a similar type of player to Holly McNamara in that he relies on pace and agility to find the back of the net from open play inside the box so we should ideally be giving him the ball in midfield and letting him get inside the box instead of crossing.
Can you stop comparing these players to Matilda’s players? With all due respect, they are meaningless comparisons.

To me - I also drop Beach - not specifically for anything wrong in this game but for three reasons - but starting him here was the right decision.

1) He could arguably have done better for both goals - though not entirely his fault for either.
2) He is a poor sweeper and gets caught in no man's land. Paraguay will be a different beast to the USA and Turkey - they like to drop deep as well - we will need a sweeper keeper in that match.
3) As a by-product of (1) - he would have headed into this match with immense confidence. Now as a young player he is likely to be second guessing himself going into the next game.

Pat, the thing about Matt is that in 100 or so games, I really struggle to think of a game where he did as well as Beach did in game 1. Was there a WC game when we all went, thank god Maty was in goals?

I'm not a soccer expert, but I see this tourmanent as building towards a time when we can win a world cup.

That isn't going to be this year, while the game against Paraguay is vital, prefer to build for the future, which means guys that can be in the squad for another 8-12 years.

Point 2) above is important.

Most of the effective attack in Turkey/Paraguay came from intercepting lose passes. Turkey could move the ball up the field in a controlled fashion, Paraguay mostly played on the break.

IMO we should not over commit players forward, we should keep posession, and move the ball up the field.

Practice scoring from corners and free kicks, we might get a lot of them.
