A-league attendances

Haha geez have you cracked open a bottle of red and started bashing away at the keyboard Son of Sam? You're on the warpath today!
Woke up at 4am briefly. Enough to scribble away to get things off my chest .... then fell asleep again for 3 nice hours! Hehe

Sorry to get nasty, but many people in your position thought that by getting rid of the wog clubs, that bloke running the pub would suddenly become a soccer fan! How does it feel to know that these wog clubs you disenfranchised could have been your friend. But you went for the soccer haters instead.
On cue …. The people the A League tries to cater for …. Spits in their face with that Fed Square decision.

Maybe they should host it at Lakeside?

Makes more sense than what that idiot on Twitter said. Leon, whose handle is #DeathToTheNsl suggested Western United’s dormant stadium is going to be used!!!

the dormant stadium could be kind of fun to be fair, open field

AFL dropping ticket prices 26% during the season. Showing the APL what can be done on the fly. Hopefully next season our general admission tickets can be capped at $20 too!

Interesting that the AFL say crowds are strong, yet are dropping prices.
Reading between the lines, that tells me that they are getting good attendance from the season ticket holders, but have seen a big drop in casual ticket sales. No business is going to drop prices if sales are strong, the opposite is usually true.

afl can't stand that the World Cup is taking a few headlines. Shows that they are suffering some pain.

Yep....been going on for years!!

Jason Akermanis the former Brisbane Lions AFL player used to have a weekly column in the Courier Mail 'newspaper'....

And I use the term newspaper in its loosest form here. On the eve of the World Cup finals in 2006 he wrote about his thoughts on the Socceroos!

It eerily went along the lines of...."I wouldn't normally write about soccer but because of the World Cup i'm going to have a shot..."

He then went on to say that soccer would never be big in Australia and that no matter how many World Cups 'Footy' would always rule the roost...

He then totally derided the Socceroos as a non event. And ran down some of the players as nobodies....

Players like Mark Schwarzer, Mark Viduka, Tim Cahill, Marco Bresciano, Lucas Neiill and Vince Grella who were all hugely recognised on the global stage playing in two of the world's biggest sporting competitions.

It was an absolute hatchet job and this rag of a 'newspaper' actually printed it!!

I sent an email to Akermanis because they actually gave out his working email address in the Courier Mail's website. My email was scathing about his hatchet job column.

The snearing reply from Akermanis was I get paid for writing this column...what do you get??

I replied I don't get paid anything what's your point?

He then replied again with further snearing about his re-numeration.

I replied again telling him I was a millionaire who didn’t need $300 from a dip shit 'newspaper' ..

I wasn't actually a millionaire back then but I was probably close..

I never got a third reply!!

Wow thx for sharing that.

I really liked aker as a player but that's genuine hatred I don't get why he and people go out of their way to hate on it. I think these days the players would be more open to football

Around that time Simon Hill wrote that famous article on The World Game website called 'Can you smell.the fear.....'

It was a big talking point about why the traditional sport codes in Australia were out to get football or soccer....a hatred of the round ball game if you like.

I didn't really buy into it too much, partly because I had come from a different sporting landscape where football was already the biggest sport.

I thought it was mostly classic Australian sports tribalism, code rivalry, and cultural differences rather than outright 'hate'. Australia is unusual in having four major football codes (AFL, NRL, rugby union, and soccer) competing for fans, media, sponsorships, and grassroots participants. This creates natural defensiveness, especially from the two dominant domestic codes.

But mostly larrikin piss-taking rather than deep malice.

But Akermanis's piece in the Courier Mail really got my goat. I didn't really support the Socceroos because I am English and obviously follow them. However I'd always had quite an admiration for them even before coming to Australia which came since reading a big interview with Terry Venables in the UK Sunday Times on his coaching experience with Australia's National Team....

I still have that today. I think the way they go around holding themselves as professional sportsmen is almost unique to Australian sporting culture. Travelling all over the world whilst many of them holding up club careers in the European Leagues.

And I know Akermanis fits the profile of an outspoken AFL traditionalist but I just thought at thw time that it was a major media hatchet job on the Socceroos and the game and I took offence!!
