I'm tempted to put a full "competitive matches at home" results thingy together now. This will include:
  • World Cup Qualifiers
  • Asian Cup Qualifiers
  • Asian Cup Finals tournament matches held in Australia
  • Oceania Nations Cup Finals tournament matches held in Australia
  • Olympic Games (1956 only)
ok will do a full record like a table

This is up to the 1974 World Cup Finals

This is really interesting to go through

So at the moment this is what I've counted (prior to the 1997 World Cup Qualifiers):
  • World Cup Qualifiers
  • Oceania Nations Cup (regardless if considered full international or not)
  • Olympic Games and Qualifiers (this is only the 1956 and 1988 Olympics, as this is what FIFA consider as full internationals for us - I've added the 1988 game against Yugoslavia even though that doesn't officially count, as we were a full international side, even though Yugoslavia was not).
Up to this point in 1997, we have only lost 4 competitive fixtures at home:
  • India 4-2 (1956 Olympics - Melbourne)
  • Iran 1-0 (1977 WCQ - Melbourne)
  • Kuwait 2-1 (1977 WCQ - Sydney)
  • New Zealand (1981 WCQ - Sydney)
HOME
41 Games played, 27 wins, 10 draws, 4 losses. 110 goals scored, 29 goals conceded, +81 Goal Difference

AWAY/NEUTRAL
52 Games played, 21 wins, 16 draws, 15 losses. 83 goals scored, 55 goals conceded, +28 goal difference

Apologise for multiple posts - I just want to capture different points in time.

As of the end of our tenure in Oceania (Australia v Uruguay being our last competitive game in this range), the home losses are:
  • India 4-2 (1956 Olympics - Melbourne)
  • Iran 1-0 (1977 WCQ - Melbourne)
  • Kuwait 2-1 (1977 WCQ - Sydney)
  • New Zealand 2-0 (1981 WCQ - Sydney)
  • New Zealand 1-0 (1998 OFC - Brisbane)

  • Confederations Cups
All matches that were drawn, and went to extra time, are counted as draws at their full time score (eg, 1-0 win at 1997 Confederations Cup over Uruguay, is a 0-0 draw)

Ok, after collating a Home table, and Away/Neutral table for both our tenure in OFC, AFC and in total, this is the full outlay.

yeah, but specifically 08 is weird. Not just 8
alright, turns out it was some sort of Liverpool tourism thing (Everton #8 was also wearing 08)

Special 08 shirts at Mersey derby
James Beattie

The changes were agreed by the FA Premier League
Two top footballers have made history by having their shirt numbers changed for an all-important Merseyside derby.
Everton's James Beattie and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard both wore an "08" shirt on Saturday - marking the city's year as Capital of Culture.

The numbers got special permission from the FA Premier League to promote the 08 Ambassadors Programme.

After the match, at Anfield, the two shirts were being auctioned for charity by the Liverpool Culture Company.

The 08 Ambassadors programme has been created for well-known people to spread the word about the city and its role as European Capital of Culture 2008.

Ambassadors already signed up include Cherie Booth, Ken Dodd, Paul Sculthorpe, Gerry Marsden and former Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon.

Steven Gerrard

The shirts were being auctioned after the Anfield match
Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Warren Bradley, said the 08 shirts were "a tremendous gesture of support".

Gerrard said before the match: "Liverpool has got everything you need, with great places to go and lots to see.

"The derby will be shown live around the world and I'm glad we can help fly the flag for the Capital of Culture 2008."

Unfortunately, the match ended early for Gerrard who was sent off in the 18th minute for a second bookable offence.

the other thing is how much you rate commitment. I think players who played in hte big 5 and still turned up against oceania opponents for farina should get a lot of credit

Aloisi comes to mind?

For some reason John Aloisi has always been underrated. Who can forget his winning penalty in 2005 v URU and his cherry on top of the cake goal v JAP in Germany 2006. He seems to be a modest sort of guy maybe that's part of it

also being in the shadow of viduka

5 seasons of regular football in the big 5 and always put the national team first

better results for the national team too, which is partly because he played against weaker nations which meant he had time to develop chemistry with the team

viduka and even kewell were much worse for country than club and I suspect that playing few games against oceania meant they never got used to international football

3 things I would do on first glance:

1. Bresciano above Emerton
2. Remove Craig Johnston - if you refuse to play for Socceroos, you're not Australian.
3. Needs more Grella

the drop from grella to valeri was pretty noticeable, we struggled to work the ball forward when that transition happened. Really underrated because his shooting sucked (and people notice goals and assists)'

yer nah - its greatest Aussie players - nothing to do re Roos.
Top 20 Players plain and simple.
I'm not biased :) BUT he ranks 1 full stop due to titles/trophys won - NO one will comes close and a start up player for a great BIG league Club.
Could I tweak others ? yes Laza above Irvine.
Bresc I'd near on put above Jedi/Emo.
Really not sure re beloved Johnny W - he never played abroad but led locally and is a Roo icon of the old hard days but his ranking re Top 20 players is possibly higher than I feel.
I agree about more Grella NCB - I'd find a spot for him.

Have to disagree with the last paragraph.

Kewell's 58 caps only included ONE game against an Oceania side. (Solomons, 2004)

Scored a vital goal in the 2006 finals against Croatia, and important competition goals (World Cup qualifiers or Asian Cup) against Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan- teams that mostly still give us a hard time.

Not to mention friendly goals against England and the Netherlands.

A lot of his games for OZ were in the later part of his career when his career at Liverpool and Galatasaray were on the slide. He always showed up for our national side. At the time of his last cap (2012) he was the second longest serving Socceroo of all time.

A pretty glib dismissal of him, Grazor!

In that case, why no Vieri?
